I can't tolerate macrolides due to their cardiac effects and was wondering if any other abx or natural herb can be combined with mepron to increase effectiveness..

Artemisinin or Artemesia Annua

I do take the artemisinin but didn't know if that was enough to gain the full benefits from the Mepron (which I haven't started yet)

Why not try another anti-malarial, such as Malarone or Larium, that does not need to be taken with Zithromax or Biaxin?

Bactrim DS

Sammi: I just spent $200 on the Mepron... I thought there would be other options besides the Zith..

NMN: I am seriously considering Bactrim DS. Can it be taken with Mepron?

lululymemom, Dr. B. discusses Babesiosis treatment starting on page 23 at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

I think he talks about adding Bactrim to the Mepron/Zith (or Biaxin or Ketek) combo. I don't know if Bactrim would be effective with Mepron by itself.

Can you ask your doctor?

Dr. H. in Calgary initially wanted to treat with antibiotics, but now is talking about supplements only. I think he is afraid to perscribe due to reprecussions from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. So now I'm back to square one. After giving him thousands for testing and doctors visits, he's changed his mind. Tests are positive, by the way.

Let this be a warning to anyone here that goes to see him.

So now I am left guessing at how to take the Mepron which was perscribed with the Zith by another doctor. Started on the Zith only to find out it was causing heart skips.

Yes its a good combo. Ideally it is recommended with zithro also but Zithro does not do much for me and I am doing a few days of bactrim mepron at the moment and it is hitting the babs nicely. I find its just as good without the zithromax.

NMN: That is encouraging to hear! I'm assuming Bactrim is for Bart as well so I think Art and Bactrim would be a good combination.

Oops! I meant in addition to the Mepron..

lululymemom, I think it is terrible the doctor is backing out.

Have you tried Biaxin with Mepron? I have heart palps and other varied heart-related symptoms from Babesiosis itself. I am not saying this is why you have them, but it can be a symptom.

Sammi: I am wanting to try Biaxin, just not sure if I will have the same side effects as Zith since they are in the same family. I do think that Babesia is responsible for my heart symptoms as well.
I should have known to be cautious about the doctor I was seeing after I read alot of negative reviews on ratemds.com

Even with negative reviews, it is upsetting to go through that when you are looking for a doctor to help.

Each case is different of course, but I liked Biaxin with Mepron better than Zithromax with Mepron.

You're right about that, but when desperate times call for desperate measures sometimes we take what we can get. Unfortunately there are no Lyme literate doctors in Western Canada. I figured his cost would still be less than having to go across the border.

I hear alot of good things about Biaxin, and hoping it will not have the same side effects as the Zith. Only one way to find out I guess.. [Smile]
