Anyone that has hyponatremia (low salt hormone) in the blood also on treatment for ocd/depression. docs think it might be my ocd meds causing my hyponatremia. On anafranil and lamictal. Not sure, and am afraid to go off them to test. On lamictal since May and on anafranil since 2004. Why now? Anyone have knowledge of this ? going to nephrologist tomorrow and would like to tell him where to start. Seems lately no one knows and I'm fighting a losing battle. Off antibiotics for a little while till someone could help. Thanks and I hope no one gets in this situation. We're all stuck in a way, but docs are stumped too.

Listen, I don't think you want to hear this but that nephrologist will look into everything and probably find nothing.

You need to have your aldosterone level checked and recheck your adrenals...your problems just scream adrenals to me. I've been there and done that. You should do a 4X cortisol check, go look up zrt on line.

8a/12n/4p/12mn...cortisols will show how things are going...your mental problems sound like low cortisol, also have you rechecked your thyroid lately?

What did your nephrologist tell you. i went to see one too and they did nothing for me.

I agree with mookie. I had low sodium due to adrenal insufficiency. I take florinef to keep my sodium levels up and also use salt liberally. Keeps my blood pressure more stable. Boy, I really felt crappy until this was fixed. You can have an aldosterone deficiency and or adrenals too. Never heard of meds causing this but?? I learn something new everyday.....

Have you been tested for RMSF? It is passed by ticks and can present differently than expected from what I've seen of others on this forum.

http://www.columbia-lyme.org/patients/tbd_spotted_fever.html

"Conventional blood tests can produce results that hint at RMSF. Among the typical findings are hypoanotremia (low sodium), thrombocytopenia, white blood cell abnormalities and/or elevated liver enzymes."

From research that Marnie has done, borrelia uses sodium to propel itself.

Bb is depleting your salt. Low blood sodium is called hyponatremia and it can cause serious problems including seizures.

Bb's "swimming" ability is dependent on NaCl (sodium chloride = table salt).

Bb makes our infected defense cells "cold", so we send in the "de-icer" NaCl.

(Do you live up north where they "salt" the icy roads?)

Well...that makes Bb happy 'cause it WANTS NaCl (table salt) in the cell."

Personally I think it would be wise to go ahead and get an evaluation. Maybe they won't find anything but maybe they will. Not everything is lyme.

I had pretty low sodium--19 at the point I changed llmds and rapidly getting lower. This had been going on for months, and I just didn't know what to do about it.

This new doc shifted my protocol quite a bit--continuing on my central abx (which seemed to be working); taking me off another abx. Adding a raft of supplements, including teasel root, and some amino acids.

We had the tests run again at my next visit, and for the first time in three years, my sodium levels were in the normal range.

I can't account for the change, so maybe it's just time.

Have you tried lactated ringers? It's basically an IV of electrolytes added to a saline bag. Loved them! Even kept my PICC line in to keep doing them, but then had to get it pulled due to infection.

If you don't still have your PICC line, then you could get a heplock and try a few bags of the lactated ringers.

Btw, we discussed a bit on another forum...I have milder electrolyte issues and my symptoms got bad after mino and the abx similar to the one your took briefly last month....
