I hope not. I was given Rifaximin by my GI dr to see if it would help some symptoms I am having.

It says that if you have an allergic reaction to Rifampin you should not use. So are they kissing cousins or what???

I took Rifampin many years ago and swore "never again" as it caused a 3 wk 24/7 killer headache. I just took my first pill and THEN decided to check "Drug Digest!" [Eek!]

WAIT A MINUTE... My script says "Xifaxan" .. Then Drug Digest mentions Rifaximin as an ingredient. Class of Rifamycins.

No experts on Rifampin here?

Ah well!! No headache thus far!

I googled Xifaxan and found it's a "Rifampin-related antibiotic".

Rifampin is a type of rifamycin.

Xifaxan, also known as Rifaximin, is a type of rifamycin too.

Wikipedia says: Rifaximin is a semisynthetic, rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic, meaning that very little of the drug will pass the gastrointestinal wall into the circulation as is common for other types of orally administered antibiotics.

So would that be the difference? Doesn't rifampin go into the bloodstream?

OH!! Yes, the dr mentioned that it would not be absorbed. WHEW!! No headache so far and I've taken two pills now. (well.. a little headache, but may be inconsequential)

Thanks, pab and mj!! [Cool]

This is probably a dumb question but why would you take a drug that does not pass the gastrointestinal wall into circulation?

nefferdun-- from what i know rifaximin is given and approved for SIBO (small intestinal bacteria overgrowth) so you want to kill the germs where they reside.

plus if it is true that what--90% of our immune cells are near or at the gut that would make sense too.
