I have been feeling depressed and morbid these last couple days for what I think is no reason, ever since I started taking bactrim and upped my dose of minocycline from 50mg every other day to 100mg every other day. Is there some reason these antibiotics could be causing depression directly or indirectly?

I would say it's not the bactrim causing the depression but the Bart it hitting that's causing it.
Mine came the first three weeks on Rifampin and Zith. Terrible 3 weeks. Then great - my old real self!
I changed abx and now am back on the Rifampin and Zith and have been battling depression, agitation again.
Fine with me as long as I know it's a symptom that will pass and it means those bad guys are dying!
I say it's like childbirth. Go with the flow and know that this too shall pass and we will survive it. It's all part of the process.

i would say its not the meds itself but a herx. But I am not a doctor. Sometimes you need to consider psych meds during lyme treatment. Obviously on a doctor can tell you and reccomend this.
I have to take psych meds during treatment. If it persists or is bad talk to your doc and see hwta he/she says. Also finding a good therapist to talk things out with really helps me deal.
but they have to be good and understand chronic illness.

Some antibiotics DEFINITELY caused mood changes in me (for good and bad).
I'd talk to your doctor if it's interfering with your functioning. Some antibiotic side effects can become permanent. I don't know enough about the ones you're on to say if those do. I'd definitely consult your doc.

One of my LLMD's (a neurologist) told me that both rifampin and doxy could cause depression. He said there were some studies done on this. Minocycline is a cousin of doxy, so I think it might be possible.
As merrygirl stated, I believe that some of our herxing presents as depression also. I have gotten blue at different times during treatment - on both antibiotics as well as herbs.
If it is interfering with your functioning, please let your LLMD know. You may need to subsitute something else. Good luck and I hope you feel better!

I def had depression or some kind of zombie like mind way on Bactrim, but that may have also been a combination thing from all my diseases.?
When I stopped Bactrim I did feel way better in many ways, but I was also getting much better from my treatments, so....

Some members of the psychiatry profession who are more in tune with holistic health cite that minocycline has anti-inflammatory effects and as such can actually have an antidepressant effect, since depression has been linked to chronic and wide-spread inflammation. "Die off" can cause a temporary increase in negative symptoms, so it could be that when the dosage was increased, more die off was occurring, therefore an increase in temporary negative mood effects. However, since all medications, including antibiotics, can cause adverse side effects from mild to life threatening, so your physician should be consulted.
