I still can't sleep well. I've resolved all my detox issues, and adrenals are functioning normally now after a year of correcting their dysfunction.

I need something other than multiple doses of Ativan.

I find 5 Htp works well for me. It didn't work when I was still sick. It keeps me asleep.

If I have trouble falling asleep (like when I'm in a hotel or uptight), I take valerian root.

The best natural remedy by far is Corydalis root
from herbalextractsplus.com
I have had insomnia most of my life and this works.

L-theanine and L-tryptophan (I had to take them for awhile to notice increasing effects)at night followed by sublingual melatonin (increased my dose until it made me sleepy....which for me was all the way to 15 mg.

These have helped me in addition to bioidentical hormones.

In addition, I get off the computer by about 8:30 pm and lay down to watch tv in a dark living room.

No bright lights after 8:30 pm.

I decided to go with something basic. I purchased liquid Melatonin. I'll take my Ativan as normally done, and if I wake up, or can't fall asleep, I'll take the Melatonin to make up for it.

I'll see how it goes. I just purchased more Pekana products, including one for inflammatory conditions. I'm hopeful that this combined with the detox (as I've done), will alleviate further symptoms and that I'll be able to sleep.

I've had good luck with Pekana. Also, it takes TIME for the adrenals to fully heal, then you'll get tired at night and sleep.

The most amazing supplement by far for keeping me asleep is a Metagenics product called folapro. It is the active form of folic acid. I started taking it for an MTHFR mutation. I went from waking up 3-4 X's per night to sleeping for at least 5 hours straight. Amazing for me since it had been decades since I had slept that long at one time except on very rare ocassions.

MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormone) is often very low in lyme patients who have biotoxin illness (probably most chronic lyme patients in my opinion). I just started taking a product that is supposed to help this called MSH by Precision Herbs. I don't have a relationship with the company.

If you have dealt with biotoxins then your MSH *might* be OK but that would necessitate you having dealt with MARCONS as described by Dr. S of the book "Mold warriors". You would have had to have a deep nasal culture and some specific treatment for that.

I've been taking 3 mg's of slow release melatonin every night for years. It has many benefits including protecting the brain from quinolinic acid (according to Buhner). Quinolinic acid is often elevated in lyme patients and is very damaging to the brain. My sleep doctor told me to take melatonin way ahead of time - like 3-4 hours before I want to go to sleep.

Be very careful with tryptophan. Disordered tryptophan is an issue for some lyme patients and with supplementation you can increase quinolinic acid. Something you do not want to do.

Buhner sent me this email...

It's expensive but try liquid melatonin by premier research labs (the ONLY one that I think works well) - it will last quite a while). Put a drop on the back of your hand and lick it off, then do it again. Just as you go to bed. It takes about an hour to work. If you wake up in the middle of the night, taken another drop. It's what I do and it works great.

I use the magnesium oil about 45 minutes before bed time. I apply it, let it sit for 30 minutes then take a hot shower and get into bed. Took away my muscle twitches & sugar cravings. The first bottle I cut in half with prill water b/c it can sting a bit on the body.
