I lost from 128 down to 102 pounds after getting sick with LD. Just recently I have started to feel better, but now I'm gaining weight "fast". Is this because I am getting better?

Let me add that I also started taking hormones and psych meds a few months ago; so those are possible culprits. However, before I started to feel better, literally nothing would make me gain weight.

I needed to put on a few pounds, but not this fast. If I'm not really careful with my diet, I will gain a pound a week. This does not seem normal. I've been trying to walk; but I'm having to slowly work up to a decent distance since I am so out of shape.

Just wondered what opinions were out there on this subject. I have read that early in LD you can lose weight and later on gain. What causes that to happen?

Thanks
SG

I've been having problems like that ever since I started treating. Before I was treating I was just dropping lbs like crazy but once I took that first doxy that was the end of it.

New LLMD wants to check my thyroid since she says she doesn't think she has one lyme patient who DOESN'T have a thyroid problem.

Good luck. I hate it!

My thyroid test always come back right smack dab in the middle range of normal. Don't know why!

I dropped pounds slowly the first 2 years of my illness, then when I started treating I dropped a little faster, then after a year it stabilized at 102, but I couldn't gain one pound for 9 months or more, no matter what I did.

I hate it too. Its so weird!

I don't understand why this happens but it is extremely frustrating. I gained 10 lbs last summer, was unable to lose any of that weight but managed to maintain it without gain for several months. Now I've gained between 15 and 20 lbs since July.

Some of this weight is edema (at least 5 lbs). It is not pitting but clothing and shoes leave deep indentations that do not go away for several hours after. That is not normal.

I hate that I am not able to control my weight. It makes me feel like I am a failure. Lyme and co have already made me feel terrible and now they are making me look bad too.

Before I got Lyme I was healthy, so active, ate right, etc. If I gained a pound it was from eating out while on vacation. When that happened I would get back to my normal routine at home and the extras would melt away. No worries.

Last week I spoke with my LLMD about this. He thinks that the edema is from my coinfections flaring. The other weight gain might be from stress or hormonal imbalances. I'm supposed to get my adrenals retested this week. Thyroid is high normal on Armour (reverse T3 is high too so I wonder if maybe it is blocking absorption more than we know).

I've also been on NuvaRing (low dose hormones) since this spring because my periods were a mess. My LLMD insisted that I try an OCP to help regulate everything and reduce the stress on my body.

sutherngrl, I wish I had an easy answer for you. Hopefully this will get better for us as we get the infections under control and our body's regain health.

I can surely relate! When I was so sick with Lyme I lost 25 lbs in 2 months. My hubby thought I looked great, but I was too sick to care.

Now that I'm better I'm pouring on the weight and them some. I gained back all the 25 lbs and more, but I won't get on the scale. I feel much better, but now I'm overweight.

I've been taking 1/2 pill of Isocort, an adrenal supplement. It's less than 2.5 mg equivalent of Cortef. I'm wondering if that is making me gain weight. My thyroid has always tested normal.

I haven't been walking as much as I had before this relapse. I can walk 7 blocks and feel decent while I do it, but than an hour later I crash. I still can't do a lot of physical activity yet, though my mental acuity is as good as it has ever been. My physical stamina is not as good as I would like.

Any more theories on the weight gain issue?

Thanks,
CherylSue
