My 14 year old daughter was diagnosed with ADD.

She's been lyme free, no symptoms for well over 2 years.

I noticed the last year or so she's had trouble focusing.

Her Psychiatrist diagnosed her with ADD.

Does anyone know of any supplements or natural alternatives that might work well?

I strongly suggest checking back with her LLMD. ADD can be a symptom that lyme is starting to flare.

HEAVY METALS should also be assessed.

A GLUTEN-FREE diet often helps.

GOTU KOLA
--------------

Gotu Kola (not a cola) can calm the nervous system while also helping with alertness. It helps give a sense of well-being without feeling wired or hungover.

Of everything I've used over the years, I cannot say enough good about the wonderful effects I've seen - in many ways - from Gotu Kola.

GOTU KOLA -- An Under-Appreciated Herb: Multifaceted Benefits on Microcirculation for Cardiovascular and Cognitive Health -- By Linda Fugate, PhD

The best nutrition in the world will not do anyone any good if it doesnt reach our tissues. The gatekeeper to tissues is the microcirculatory system, which includes blood vessels smaller than 0.1 mm in diameter. The health of the microcirculatory system is now recognized as critical to the total health of the individual. (1)

Gotu Kolas Effect on the Circulatory System . . . .

From Wound Healing to Brain Health . . . .

. . . Gotu Kolas primary action is enhancement of the health of the circulatory system. Because circulation is critical to the health of the entire body, Gotu Kola offers benefits in a variety of conditions.

The antioxidant and collagen supportive functions of Gotu Kola are particularly important in enhancing healing of damaged tissues. . . .

GOTU KOLA LEAF (Centella asiatica,)

. . . bitter and astringent in taste and cooling in action. It is a brain and memory tonic, and an anti-poison, and very useful for wound and skin healing. . . .

. . . TAM doctors use it as a brain and memory tonic, and have found it especially useful in children.

In Nepal, during the ceremony for the first day of spring, gotu kola leaf is given to schoolchildren to help them in their studies by improving memory and concentration.

It is very safe and extremely effective. TAM doctors also use it to cleanse the system of toxins and reduce inflammation. TCM doctors use gotu kola to clear up boils and toxic fevers. . .

The primary effects of gotu kola include both wound healing and improvement of mental clarity and emotional balance. . . .

. . . The Indian Central Council for Research on Ayurveda and Siddha, citing more than ten pharmacological and animal studies of gotu kola, also found evidence of the following characteristics:

CNS depressant [calming without causing drowiness], memory enhancer, anti-convulsant, antispasmodic, behavior and intelligence enhancer, and blood sugar regulator (Pandley et al., eds, 1996).

Even if all the lyme symptoms seem to be gone, this offers so much of value to anyone who has had or who currently deals with any aspect of lyme:

ADD meds are stimulants, so a natural alternative would be coffee.

I've had students in 3rd grade who treated their ADD with good old coffee. Black.

Regarding coffee: Mount Hagen instant organic coffee. A TINY Amount may work earlier in the day but too much will trash the adrenals. And when the coffee wears off, adrenal fatigue may take over if some good nutrients are not consumed about that time.

Her brain may need more complex carbs - or more fats - &/or more protein. Carrot juice, with some greens, is very helpful. SPIRULINA POWDER is good, too. But so is whole protein.

CHICKEN or SALMON for BREAKFAST.

Dark Chocolate might also be considered as a mid morning snack with nuts. Since she is past lyme treatment and antibiotics, she should be able to handle a little sugar if along with nuts (or after a meal) and in DARK chocolate.

It's an acquired taste but 72% dark has about 12-15 grams of sugar per one once

85% DARK has about 5 -6 grams per ounce.

With it being dark, about one ounce is all most people want, anyway.

Nuts, themselves help brain function.

HEMP PROTEIN POWDER, too. Trader Joe's carries a chocolate hemp protein powder that is sweetened with a good source of palm sugar so it's helpful to manage an even glycemic load.

Consider treating her for parasites which is common with lyme disease and can cause ADD. Google parasite symptoms and do a search on here. Also coconut oil can be very helpful.

My son (age 7) has ADHD. I just read an article from Dr. Mercola saying that taking Krill Oil for 6 months will show at least 60% of ADD patients thinking and acting better.

I'm going to try that soon.

Other than that... a little black organic coffee for my son helps us get through home school.

No, but you might want to consider this ...

...(scroll to the Becker Interview)...

http://www.wirelessimpacts.org/science/becker.html

Dr. Becker died, but he spent his entire life studying the non-thermal biological effects of chronic exposure to artificial electromagnetic radiation, including microwaves. He was even nominated for several Nobel prizes for this research...so he isn't some quack. I've read both of his books and can honestly say he's onto something...Cross Currents and The Body Electric...EXCELLENT books.

There is a website called Native Remedies and they have a product called Focus Formula and Brightspark for ADD

They work but you have to give them to your child several times per day. Definitely worth a try. When one of my sons was younger he would get very frustrated at times (we didn't know yet he actually had adhd) and gave him the products and 24 hours later he was so much better. We only used them sporadically though.

But he was officially diagnosed in the spring after schoolwork in 5th grade was getting really difficult for him. We put him on Vyvanse and it is amazing!!! He just made the honor roll and he is so happy. He gets up and takes it all on his own because he feels like a better version of himself on it. His symptoms are very subtle but considered severe. He absorbs and retains everything he hears now and he is so articulate.

I think our kids are lucky to get the diagnosis but many people don't and they struggle.

Good luck! Try the herbs but don't hesitate to try the medications out there. We are so glad we did.

Since she has had lyme in the past, I would seriously consider treating lyme again. Perhaps seeing if there is any reaction (herxing) to herbal treatments first. Nutramedix Samento would probably be a good test. That would be a good indicator if the lyme is still there.
