So I never have good sleep but it is worse sometimes. My norm is about 3-5 hours of sleep and then I wake up and am up for about 18 hours, repeat for many weeks. Then I will go a week where I sleep 12 or 13 hours with a few interruptions.

But since the lumbar puncture I have been having a problem with waking up anywhere from every 10 to 40 minutes, 40 is doing good. I don't understand what is going on.

Any advise?

Sounds AWFUL!!

I have no idea what is wrong, but I would sure call my dr and get some help so I could sleep!!

My dr doesn't really give stuff for sleeping. She gave me a script for Trazadone once but it didn't work and she hasn't given me anything since. I've tried all the over the counter stuff, melatonin, etc, but nothing helps me. The only thing I can do is to stay up as long as I possibly can and then i am usually able to sleep better.

Maybe you could ask her for another script of Trazodone? In higher doses, it usually works... but you may not STAY asleep.

Combine it with melatonin (time released) and you may have success.

Source Naturals has a good one.. Vitacost.

sickntired,

Did you have this weird sleeping pattern only since you had a lumbar puncture?

Did you have a headache or any other unusual symptoms (new pain in your legs for example) elsehwere, post-puncture?

@Camp Yes, to all of it. The sleeping thing isn't every single night, just kind of random. I got the spinal headache about 36 hours post LP, had to go in and have a blood patch. And I have had weird nerve pain in my right leg mostly. It is reminiscent of sciatica nerve pain. It isn't horrible but just kind of there sometimes.

What are your thoughts? Do you think it is connected to the LP?

sickntired,

Sorry I haven't been around to respond earlier. I've been feeling unwell and not keeping up with the boards.

Yes, there is a relationship between lumbar punctures and the symptoms you're describing.

I have had a few LPs myself, and they've mostly been uneventful but during one they hit a nerve and it triggered nerve pain and leg weakness in both legs. It felt very much like sciatica. It took about 3 weeks before the leg nerve pain and weakness totally dissipated.

After a LP, you're supposed to lie down flat for a few hours (5?) to avoid post-LPS headaches. Did they have you do that, or rush you out the door?

Also, do you know what your intracranial pressure readings were from the LP - how long ago was the LP and have any other results come in yet?

If you had high intracranial pressure, get ongoing headaches, and are evaluated for a sleep disorder and it's found you have sleep apnea, there could be something else going on and it's not just the LP.

I think you need further medical evaluation, either way, given your sleep schedule. I wouldn't just look for sleeping pills - that would be just a patch on a problem. It would be better to know what's going on. It might not just be a Lyme and coinfection issue but a different problem.

3 to 5 hours of sleep every night has sadly become the norm for me, and I've never even had a spinal tap.

Check these websites out daily though...

I've definitely found my sleep to be affected by 'Space Weather events', as crazy as it sounds, but I'm having seizures now and probably having seizures in my sleep, too...
