I am on my 5th day of amoxicillin (500mg 3x day) for an ear infection. Today I've started having bloody diarrhea and a temp of 100.6.

I have decided to skip all doses until I can get a hold of my doc, which may not be until Monday. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Absolutely you should be worried. Yes, I would actually call the Doc this weekend...usually they have an answering service and will page the on call Doctor.

It could be c diff and you would want to get treated ASAP. If things get worse, you need to go to the ER for IV fluids and have then do a stool test for c diff.

If that is what it is, oral flagyl or vanco is the treatment.

I would call your doctor's emergency number.

I was able to speak to a PA this morning and they suggested the ER. Crossing my fingers that it isn't c diff.
Thanks very much for your replies. [Smile]

I'm very glad you are going to the ER. Keep us updated...

In severe cases, C. difficile causes the colon to become inflamed (colitis) or to form patches of raw tissue that can bleed or produce pus (pseudomembranous colitis). Signs and symptoms of severe infection include:

■Watery diarrhea 10 to 15 times a day
■Abdominal cramping and pain, which may be severe
■Fever
■Blood or pus in the stool
■Nausea
■Dehydration
■Loss of appetite
■Weight loss
When to see a doctor
Many people have loose stools during or shortly after antibiotic therapy. See your doctor if your symptoms last more than three days or if you have a new fever, severe pain or cramping, blood in your stool, or more than three bowel movements a day.
