Started Ceftin 2 weeks ago, and just started malarone yesterday. I haven't had any of the nausea I dreaded (well, a little last nnight, but nothing major), but boy, do I feel crappy otherwise.

I'm okay for about an hour after I take it, then I start feeling weak all over, but worse on the left side, and have some mild anxiety issues.

That all lasts for a few hours and then subsides till the next time I take it (I'm only on one pill a day at least for now).

I have no appetite, but I eat so I an take all these meds, and I'm so tired all day, but I can't sleep.

Hoping this is a herx and will pass soon. [Razz]

Hope so too!!

Babesia definitely causes fatigue, nausea and loss of appetite.

Babesia herxes are pretty bad. I noticed quite a bit of anxiety. And of course just a general sick feeling all over with tremendous weakness.

Try to stick with it. Malarone has really helped me.

Thanks. I feel absolutely wretched this morning.

My legs are achy now, and I really have air hunger and chest tightness today.

And I haven't even taken the malarone yet.

Don't you have to take it with a macrolide like Zith or Biaxin? The biaxin helped counteract the symptoms from the atovaquone when we used it.

I really don't know. I can't take zith because I'm allergic to it. LLMD didn't say anything else.

Can you take Biaxin?

Defnitiely not a herx, this is how Atovaquone makes you feel the first few weeks until you can adjust. Only a few doctors even believe you can have a die-off (herx) from Babesia as it is not bacteria.

Ya gotta be kidding, nyb!

I had the worst "herxes" of my life when treating babesia... and it wasn't even from malarone.

Let's call it "intensification of symptoms" then.

Most likely just a drug reaction. Especially with malarone/mepron, it increases fatigue. With a lot of increased fatigue, cognitive function, as well as other things are negatively effected as well.

A jarisch herxheimer reaction is exclusive to only a few types of bacteria being killed. The malarone/mepron can defnitiely make you feel worse, especially in the beginning, there is no die-off or "herx" reaction though.

Disagree bigtime. I never even took mepron.

Whatever it is, well, the past two days I have had horrific nausea. Well, today I didn't even take my abx because I felt so awful.

I can tell it's not a stomach bug, but the nausea is about that intense.

I didn't eat at all today until suppertime, when I was starving. I felt fine till about 2 hours after I ate, now I've been nauseated since then.

Hoping this subsides soon. This is how I felt when I was on the Doxy, that's why LLMD switched me, because my stomach was getting so messed up.

I hope you are on high quality probiotics.

What do you do for the nausea? I get that, too. Just started malarone again. Was on it two years ago for a few months. I don't remember it being this bad.

I had horrible nausea on malarone mepron-it made me throw up...however after a month, and I increased the doses, my major nausea went away-I stopped throwing up as well.

I still get nausea but not constantly..which makes me think it's the babesia, not the mepron/malarone.

Ginger for the nausea--ginger capsules (didn't do much for me, but work for some) or tea. The tea really worked for me during the first few months when I was constantly nauseous. Peel about an inch of fresh ginger, slice it up and boil/steep it for about ten minutes. I had to do that before I ate or drank anything else to settle it.

I still had nausea, but that took the edge off.

Malarone can be tough, but it does work. I had it with high doses of flagyl this summer, and I got to the point of vomiting before contacting my LLMD. She backed me off the flagyl, but I was fairly ill all summer.

Can you contact your LLMD about your abx combination?

I'm on Malarone 250/100mg. 3 pills 2x / day. A high dose for Duncani. With Zith.

So far tolerating it ok...not great.
