I added 200mg Doxy / 2x day to my Rifampin a week ago. In the past I have taken 100mg twice a day no problems with my tummy. I have no trouble taking it with food, no throwing up but a few days after starting the Doxy I have developed a round the clock nawing and aching bordering on throwing up when my stomach is empty. The pain is in the middle of my bely just above the belly button and goes straight up, no pain anywhere else. The pain gets slightly better with food, but never goes away. It's hard to concentrate and rest because of the nawing. I have to make myself eat because it makes my appetite lousy due to the pain. Any pointers on what this could be and what natural remedies I might try. Like I said, this started right after I began the Doxy. I have never had stomach issues in the almost 1 year of treating Lyme / Bartonella. Thank you.

You might want to get evaluated for stomach ulcer or gastritis from the meds. Oral abx are very hard on the lining of the stomach.

Sounds like you might be right. Is there anything that you know of that can give me some relief other than more meds? Thank you.

Pain being relieved by food sounds very much like an ulcer...more specifically a duodenal ulcer. It can be caused by several things, one of them being the abx but it can also be from stress, GI disturbances such as too much acid, and nervous tension.

I believe a high fiber diet aid in helping with ulcers. Other than OTC prilosec, I don't know much else. Hopefully someone else will come along and give more info. In the meantime, here is something interesting to read.

This is just my opinion and not meant to be taken as medical advice. It would probably be best to talk to your doc. Feel better soon!

I had to go off the Doxy because of this problem. It kept getting worse and never better, so LLMD took me off it. My stomach is definitely better since stopping.

Someone I know had suggested minocycline instead, but my LLMD pput me on Ceftin for now.

H. Pylori is known to cause ulcers. If abx irritate the lining of the stomach/duodenum, it can give h. pylori a chance to dig in and start making an ulcer. Treatment is acid reducing meds and antibiotics, or one can go herbal - mastic gum and myrrh gum are good...along with herbs that sooth and heal the gut lining, such as marshmallow root or slippery elm bark.

If you aren't already taking some good probiotics, I would ask my doc about that. It could really help you.
