I start doxy 100 mg. bid tomorrow PM. The info sheet says for best results to take on an empty stomach. I have not had any significant issues GI-wise from either zithro or Flagyl. Will doxy be any different and should I take as directed on an empty stomach?

It would have killed my gut. My LLMD had me take it with a meal. 100 BID is a low dose, usually it's 200.
You can try it on an empty stomach. If you get nausea, you'll know it's the doxy. I couldn't do it.

Don't even! You will just throw it up. Ignore the info sheet and take it in the middle of your breakfast.

Duly noted. I hear you loud and clear. My MD seems to be pretty conservative. We are going to keep doing the Flagyl x 10 days and then doxy x 30 days. It will be interesting to see if she ups the dose after the first 30 days.

Doxy has never bothered my stomach .
If you find it bothers you just eat a few crackers before taking it .

That would be suicide!! I took it in the middle of my meal and still hurled like that girl in The Exorcist! Shudder...

I had no problems on 300mg day taken on an empty stomach. But that's just me. If you can't do it you can certainly take it with some crackers ect.
Just be sure not to take within 2 hours of ANY dairy or it will not be absorbed properly.

Average Joe, thanks for the heads up on the dairy thing. I have been taking plain Greek Yogurt every day so I will just adjust my schedule.

I stand somewhat corrected on the dairy with this one. They essentially say you can......but may effect absorption. The following from WEB MD among others. Just clarifying.
How to use doxycycline hyclate Oral This medication is best taken by mouth on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, usually 1 or 2 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) unless directed otherwise. If stomach upset occurs, taking it with food or milk may help.
However, doxycycline may not work as well if you take it with food or milk (or anything high in calcium - more details below ), so ask your doctor or pharmacist if you may take it that way. Do not lie down for 10 minutes after taking this medication.

By the way, antacids generally contain large amounts of calcium so the same would apply

If you value your stomach, you will take the doxy in the MIDDLE of a meal. Avoid dairy.

Two doses have been uneventful. I took it on a full stomach last night, no problems. I took it after only a cup of coffee this AM (with non-dairy creamer), no problems. No major herx, only a slight headache today, which is unusual for me, gone with Advil. Feel pretty well.

I've tried taking it in the middle of the night and going back to sleep so I wouldn't notice how sick I was - I still woke up and got sick.
My doc writes for doryx. It is delayed released and much gentler on the tummy. It was only available in brand and was very expensive. But it is now available in generic.
