Hi everyone,

I started Malarone this morning, and I know that I need to take it with high fat foods. I am just not sure what that really means.

I had steel cut oats cooked with a spoonful of coconut oil, chopped walnuts, blueberries, honey, and 2% milk. Does that seem like enough?

I am looking for ideas of how to incorporate more fats into my diet, so I am open to suggestions!

Isn't Lyme weird? We spend our lives avoiding fattening foods, and now we have to seek them out!

Thank you everyone!

Extra virgin olive oil, fish oil, and seeds are other options.

I think for mepron they stated 23g of fats per serving was needed? Or something like that.

That sounds like my morning oatmeal. I put in walnuts and 1 tbsp of butter to make sure I get enough. 1 avacado has enough fat for a malarone dose. 2 Tbsp of olive oil also, I add this to a salad at dinner.

I got this list from my doctor who says 25 grams of fat per dose:

-1 egg = 5 grams
-1 Tbsp olive oil =14 gms
-1 oz cheese = 9 gms
-1 avacado =27 gms
-2 Tbsp peanut butter =16 gms

Hope that helps. Sometimes I make a turkey bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit cooked in lots of butter. It's not as hard as it seems, just a pain in the rear.

I use a lot of butter on a yam or vegetables. I make oatmeal the way you describe too. Also olive oil on a salad with lemon or apple cider vinegar. I love avocado.

I read you can increase the absorption of malarone by crushing it and mixing with something like condensed milk. I just started it too and I have not tried this.

Nefferdun: If you cannot do dairy is there another option to help with absorption like crushing it and putting it in coconut milk ice cream or almond butter? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I need to kick Babesia's butt. Thanks!

I don't know but I'm getting hungry. That sounds yummy!!!

I would think the coconut oil alone is enough.

I didn't last long crushing the Malarone - pretty sickening really. It is very hard to crush and you end up with a lot of chunks. I tried it in peanut butter, pretending it was the crunchy kind. Just couldn't stick with it as I could find no guarantee it made any difference.

Only 25% of atovoquone is absorbed in malarone, where as about twice as much in Mepron because it is a liquid. I believe that includes taking it with fat. So if you are not using fat, you are throwing away a lot of money.

Just had my morning dose with homemade granola -made with lots of coconut oil and containing a lot of nuts and seeds.

Do those of you who eat the required fat (23g) maintain a healthy weight? A gram of fat has 9 calories. If you take the regular dose of Mepron, that would be 207 calories of fat needed per teaspoon of Mepron. So daily that is 414 calories. If you are double dosing, that's 828 calories a day in fat. Most folks do not need more than 1800 calories of all food a day (especially if they are not exercising).

So, how does one maintain a healthy weight and eat the required amount of fat?
