Has this happened to anyone else?

As many of you know hubby has been running low grade fevers pretty much daily since March 25, 2011. He has had 4 high fever spikes (over 102)and been hospitalized 4 times between 3/25 and 5/30. Before this he had not really run a fever at all in the entire 10 years he has been ill with tickborne diseases.

We recently switched babesia treatment and thought he had stabilized. Daily fevers of only 99 - 99.5 most days. Today was day 30 of his most recent script for cipro for serratia marcescens. "Normal treatment for bacteremia with that pathogen is only 10 days of cipro." Blood cultures were posiitve 2 of the 4 hospitalizations. PICC replaced twice in the last few months.

Anyway hubby also got a rash and a positive titer for rocky mountain spotted fever after his 4th hospitalization.

The low grade fevers began with the first dose of IV flagyl back in March. Continued that med for 14 days before the first hospitalization. Tried pulsing 2 doses of IV flagyl weekly a couple of times over the last few months -- at least once we thought it triggered one of the other high fever spikes.

Had not done anything really aggressive to treat babesia in about a month. Currently on lariam -- 1 pill every 5 days and malarone at 6 pills daily and bactrim DS. Also mino for lyme and the cipro for serratia.

Since we still had 8 remaining doses of IV flagyl and a few doses of IV clindamycin we decided to experiment. Today was dose 3 of the IV flagyl -- have done the IV clindamycin 1 or 2 times daily the last 3 days as well.

Hubby just vomited his supper. Temperature is 101.5 Looks like the flagyl is still trying to go after something. Gave hubby some more boneset tincture and putting him to bed. Will most likely have to give hubby some tylenol later tonight as the boneset does not seem to work if the temp gets above 99.5

Will wait a few hours and see if the fever breaks but if tonight follows the pattern hubby will have trouble sleeping and the fever will stay elevated most of the night unless he takes the tylenol.

On a positive note -- at least he can take tylenol for emergencies now without it causing shaking and seizure-like episodes as it used to do. Think that indicates he is producing more glutathione than he used to and is detoxing better.

His temp went to about 100.0 after the first dose of IV flagyl and then to maybe 100.5 last night and even higher tonight. I guess it is time to pull the plug on this experiment for now.

I wish I knew why the flagyl is causing the fevers. We think it causes a babesia die off and the red blood cells are releasing the sequestered serratia and/or RMSF. But the big question is how to kill off either one of those infections.

Hubby's WBC was normal for the last 2 weeks so we were hoping the serratia was actually gone. I guess we will see what if anything his routine bloodwork tells us this week.

Hopefully the lab has the orders to repeat the RMSF titers to see if that will tell us anything.

Would be interested to know if anyone else had any wierd reactions to IV flagyl.

Hubby's WBC was very normal at 5.3 Skipped the IV flagyl yesterday and his evening fever was around 99.5

So most likely the IV flagyl was either trying to kill off babesia or lyme cysts I guess and caused some sort of temporary immune response.

He has stopped the cipro since it seems like the serratia really is finally gone. Still don't exactly understand what is causing the daily fevers -- but we did get the titers for Rocky mountain spotted fever repeated.

I have had daily fevers of up to 101 (usually more like 100) for about 4 years.

There is something called a drug fever induced by meds.

Don't know about Flagyl but my regular low grade fever got even worse on Minocycline.

I think it's a herx but will see if it doesn't go away then it might be a drug induced fever!!
