I have been having bad reflux (etc)and throat swelling issues for almost a month. It started with throat swelling and no pain at all... no other symptom, which prompted me to go see my PCP.

I then had upper GI barium swallow x-ray which indicated swelling of esophagus(duh), moderate reflux, and "curvy" esophagus (is what my primary care doc called it, I'm sure it's called something else). THEN, the pain started quickly after. Knots in stomach, heartburn from hell, sores in back of throat, red patch on back of throat.

I was put on prilosec and things got worse, then on Dexilant (prescrip PPI) and carafate solution. Was tested for H. Pylori, which was neg (unfortunately... I was hoping that would be the answer).

I have tried juicing cabbage for over a week (ulcer remedy). Didn't help. DGL licorice just makes esophagus swelling seem worse. Slippery elm helps a little.

I have only been eating a handful of things since the problems got bad, but they're healthy and low glycemic, and I understand food combining rules and have been following them. But I wasn't before all of this (I was "lower" carb, but still ate non-sugar carbs).

Now I've started getting very dizzy every time I eat, even if it doesn't have carbs.

Do you think it could be yeast in my esophagus? I pretty much always have yeast problems. I take diflucan regularly but still can't get rid of it. It causes my whole body to retain water and my feet and ankles to swell. I take probiotics (Terelac and Jarrow 40 billion).

I've had to stop my abx regiment (I see Dr. J in DC). My stomach can't take them. I used to have a very strong stomach.

The dizziness after eating, burning pain in esophagus and upper stomach, leads me now to think candida. I also was on a nasal steriod for allergies, and I just read that can cause thrush in people with weakened immune systems.

Oh, and my white blood cells have been coming back "a little" low, which the doc comments on but doesn't really say why.

Has anyone ever experienced esophageal candida before?

Thank you!!
V

Could be yeast but the GI dr would have seen it. Sounds like possible eosinophilic esophagitis.

PS... actually if you have mild yeast in your esophagus it may not show up. Ask your dr for a trial run of mycelex lozenges for yeast. It worked for me.

Thank you! I will check with her on that.

The GI I had done was not a scope, just a barium x-ray, and I haven't yet seen a GI doc, just a PCP. I didn't think yeast would show up on x-ray? Am I wrong?

No, it would only be seen on a scope. But I had really bad pain in my esophagus (following 2 wks of abx for an infection) and my GI dr gave me mycelex and scheduled an EGD.

By the time the EGD was done the next week, the pain was much better. He saw nothing on the scope. All was resolved by the Mycelex, thank goodness!

I think my PCP gave me Diflucan the next week too.

So glad it was resolved for you!! I will have to ask about the Mycelex. I take Diflucan, but its effects on my yeast issues has lessened. I am almost 100% carb free right now so we'll see if that helps, although I can't really afford to lose anymore weight.

Also taking oregano oil, which is causing quite a lyme (I think) herx. But it's hard to take when my stomach and throat are so raw.

Hoping something starts working these next few days or I will have to fork over the money for the scope!

sounds like me, I got food poisoning 2 months ago and got thrush. Have not been the same since. Am on lamisiland nystatin. Cannot take abx either, always had a strong gut before. It was suggested I have bart and started bactrim, but I had to have my wisdom teeth pulled and couldnt take the amox and bactrim due to thrush issues.
