I'm currently on hydrocortisone for low cortisol levels.
This was prescribed by my former LLMD when I started working with him.
I had to change doctors. I would only use the term LLMD rather loosely for the current doctor.
She is really knocking down the amount of hydrocortisone. This makes me slightly nervous especially without re-testing.
While I don't like being on such a medication, my original LLMD put me on it for apparently good reason.
Is there a herbal substitute that acts similarly due to low cortisol levels?

Licorice extract?

Thank you, I will look into that.
I do recall there being two types (one is de-glycerized or something like that).
Might you know which one would be appropriate?

The whole root -- nnot the deglycerized is what you are looking for. DGL can be good for G.I. issues but would not have a cortisone like effect.
Adaptogenic herbs such as Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) and rhodiola would also be helpful to rebuild adrenal function. Also needs lots of vitamin C and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5).
