Our pediatric llmd suggested and gave us Melatonin suppliment (1mg) for our 12 yr old daughter who is having disturbed sleep patterns and anxiety before falling asleep. She has great difficulty falling asleep at night.

not knowing much about this supplement I gave her one before bed last night and she fell asleep without incident within an hr...she awoke feeling refreshed and overall surprised it worked.

Reading up on Melatonin....it says that children under the age of 15 should NOT be taking anymore than .03mgs of melatonin. Even on the ProThera bottle it says..
"this product is NOT intended for anyone under the age of 25"!

**Would it be safe to cut the sublingual tablet in half?? when needed?

Is anyone taking this supplement? or giving to their child??

all info and opinions welcomed!!

my kids started 1 mg sublingual when they were very young - 1 mg. is a tiny dose. Their doc said they could take a 3 mg. one but we all did well on 1 mg. so we stayed with that - been doing it for many many years.

BTW, I tried it as well - no way my kids were going to take something I did not try.

So if it works for her, great. I felt it was safe for my kids, especially at that small dose.

There are people who say it is dangerous and there are people who say everyone should be taking it. Go with your gut. And trust your daughter ~ ask her if she likes it.

My son was 11 when he first got sick. He didn't sleep for days... I finally went and got melatonin on the third day and gave him 1mg... no change.

We were up to 5mgs before he got any sleep. He went down to 3mgs for a while and then stopped taking it altogether. He is sleeping fine now.

He did get nightmares once in a while when he was taking it. Not sure if the nightmares were because of the melatonin or not. The thing he didn't like is he would have a nightmare and not be able to wake up.

My daughter has been taking 1.5mg of Melatonin at night for about a year. Some nights I try to have her go without, and if it's late enough she will fall asleep without much trouble.

She has such difficulty falling asleep, she used to have 2 hours of restlessness before finally dozing off. Plus she had night terrors. Now, she falls asleep within 20 minutes and sleeps all night.

My LLMD recommended it in the first place - she believes it is completely safe to take on a daily basis and gives it to one of her own children.
