Just started oil pulling this weekend but I am confused about the kind of oil to use. I bought organic sunflower oil that says "expeller pressed". Most threads say to use "cold pressed". Is there a difference?

I don't know. Mine is organic sesame oil, expeller pressed. Couldn't find organic cold pressed. I've heard some bio docs say it doesn't matter much which oil you use, can use olive oil, etc. But the sites I've read mostly say sesame oil. I'd stick with the recommends of the sites dedicated to oil pulling. I'm still going to try to find cold pressed.

It's a pretty cool therapy, huh?

Best to you,
Tammy

Yes it is cool. I have read alot about it and am excited to see results. Especially white teeth. LOL.

What the heck is oil pulling?

Generally, if it does not say cold pressed, then it is not cold pressed. Expeller pressed is something they say to try to make it sound good when they can't make the cold pressed claim.

Here is an informative link on oil pulling.

I have done this before and did an increase in whitening my teeth. (One abx I was on changed the color of my teeth). Anyway, between the oil pulling and following Dr. Behm's "The Secret" my teeth are whitening.

Anyway...

After reading this link I may start the oil pulling again. Still googling and reading more. Will post other links if find informative ones.

Daisy - what kind of oil are you using? And does anyone know where to find cold-pressed oil??

I use organic cold hand pressed coconut oil. Works wonder! Added bonus, it makes my teeth whiter too! I need to do it more often!

Or is cold-pressed the "norm" found in grocery stores? Because according to Dr. K, "you don't need to go for organic oils only, a normal refined sunflower oil bought from any supermarket proven to be effective in many people".

Any thoughts?

I would only go with organic. That's just me.

Michael - check out the sites daisy listed above.

The other cool thing about oil pulling, in addition to all of the other health benefits, is that it's the only therapy that can help strengthen loose teeth.

Has anybody ever heard that you can still do oil pulling while there's food in your stomach? I know that most of the instructions are very specific that it should only be done on an empty stomach, but I've always wondered how serious that rule was.

Scorpiogirl, really Coconut Oil. We use it for lots of things, but I never thought about it for Oil Pulling. I do wonder if there would be an advantage?

I use Organic Sesame Oil, Expeller Pressed, Unrefined. No chemicals or heat used in process. The Sesame Oil also whitens teeth.

With all that I've read...I would not do this with food in my stomach as Oil Pulling affects the entire digestive system and just SEEMS TO ME that it would yield better results on an empty stomach. I usually do it only in the morning, occasionally added evening too.

Following are some definitions that may be helpful:

EXPELLER PRESSED

What does expeller pressed mean?

An expeller press uses a high-pressure hydraulic action to extract or squeeze oil from a source, such as nuts or seeds. Expeller pressing typically extracts only about 75% of the oil, which is why expeller pressed oils are sometimes more expensive. However, the quality is superior.

To extract the remaining oil from the source, or when extracting oil from harder nuts, seeds or kernels there are two processes. First expeller pressed method is used then an extraction method is used in combination with chemicals like hexane. (See also What is Hexane?)

What does cold pressed mean?

The process of expeller pressing of nuts and seeds to create oils is a heat controlled environment. To be considered a cold pressed process, the temperature must remain below 120F.

What i have read is the reason for the empty stomach is so that you are not pulling nutrients from the food. Which makes sense. I want it to take out the bad stuff that was left over. [Smile]

Daisy, my friends has been using coconut oil for YEARS. I have only been using it for 3 years. During a bad flareup, my teeth/gum hurt so badly... and this takes of edge off.

I do it for 20-30 mins first thing in the morning when I'm making breakfast before I wake up the family. This is the only quiet time I have w/out someone asking me 101 questions!

ItsMyTurn, appreciate the input.

scorpiogirl, That quiet time...that's precious time. I know what you mean.
