All- I just started Abx yesterday, I am trying to do low carb diet because I know it is important to keep the sugars at a minimum. My trouble is that I have trouble keeping my weight up. Every time I go low carb I drop weight pretty dramatically and I'm already a size 4.

Anyway, on another note, I usually have two cups of coffee in the a.m. I brew organic coffee from wholefoods. I drink it black. Is it bad to continue coffee while treating lyme? I guess there's the whole acidic connection that is bad. But, I'm giving up so much already (carbs, alcohol, dairy...), will it hurt to continue my two cups of organic coffee a day?

Good luck with antibiotics! They always help me tremendously!

Eat lots of nuts and avocados. I usually eat almonds and walnuts but last week my llmd recommended some macadamias because they are higher in fat content. Almond butter is good too...

I drink one cup of coffee a day and my llmd has never told me not to. Its my one remnant of life as it used to be! And I have adrenal issues too. I put 1/2 and 1/2 in it also which I think is bad for yeast but as I said, my one vice...

I know at least one LLMD has said that there is no point in treating lyme if you are going to drink coffee. Don't know if that's true, but I enjoy one cup (black) a month as a treat.

I would think if you used the test strips the day of drinking it and you didn't come up acidic, then you're fine. I made the mistake of drinking coffee on a doctor day, and got in trouble for being acid!!! [Wink]

As for the carbs, don't think LOW carb as much as choosing the right carbs. I know others can help you with that more, but low carb = LOW ENERGY! Your body needs carbs!

Coffee is good and bad.

It has health benefits (antioxidants)

The bad stuff is it's a very dirty product in terms of pesticides - but you are using organic.

The other bad thing is the acid. I drink cold brewed coffee which has almost all of the acid removed and it's the best tasting coffee ever.

If you have a good diet and aren't acidic then I wouldn't worry about the coffee.

I agree that it's too difficult to give up everything!

My dr. checks my blood for acidity not urine so I'm always OK. When I first went to him I wasn't, though!

Coffee stimulates HCL which is naturaly produced by the body and acts as our first line of defense against pathogens. When the immune system is compromised, the HCL can become deficient.

I add cinnamon and sometimes cloves to my coffee. Cinnamon is antifungal and cloves are antiparasitic.

Also black coffee has natural theophilline which is in asthma meds and opens the airways.

Gerd can actually be a symptom of too little acid. I have personaly benefited from coffee, but everyone has to decide for themselves what is best.

Eating lots of alkaline veggies can be a great balance, and also taking digestive enzymes and extra HCL with pepsin.

I love Super Digestaway by Soloray because it contains ox-bile and pancreatin, aS well as being antiparasitic. It's about balance.

Gosh, I just love Lymenet! I have so many of the same questions and am able to learn so much.

Mojo, can you give a link for the cold brewed coffee you use? I'd like to try because I think I am acidic. I drink about 2 mugs of 100% columbian (not organic :-( ) per day with lactose free milk and a little honey.

At my sickest, I could not handle coffee at all. Like some of you, it is like desert or a treat for me. I know I am addicted to it again, but now I seem to handle it fine each day.

What is the best way to test for acidity? blood or urine?

When I use the urine test stripes, I am always acidic at 4.5 as I recall.

In Korea, the naturopath who practices Chinese food traditional medicine said my body needs coffee. I never really drank it as I prefered black tea.

The sugar in coffee makes a big mess to me. But without sugar, it's fine. Guess what? He told me to drink it with SALT. I did it and yes, amazing, I felt so good after it!

Now I take my salt separate, and take just a black coffee, twice a day. I felt my bones were aching after coffee, when I asked him, he said it was cleaning my bones. That is what he learned in TCM there.

So for some people, coffee can be beneficial. It is used as medicine for the Chinese. I do feel it has amazing cleansing properties, it also supports the liver for being bitter (if you add no sugar).

The urine stinks more with coffee and it is a diuretic. The problem is that it opens the BBB as it crosses to the brain.

When used with salt, it is a HOT remedy, meaning makes your body hot. Green teas make your body cold, no matter if you take them boiling or cold. I learned with that man, and it is true, I can see the direct relation.

The idea of salt in the coffee was not bad as it givey the kidneys the electrolytes it needs, from early morning.

He said, my liver is very weak and if I take coffee 3-4 times a day, I can live more 10 years than if I don't. He is a very well known practioner in Korea who treats almost everyone mostly by food control.

Since then, I'm on coffee. The only bad thing I see is that coffee taste kills my wish to drink teas. I loved teas before, but now I only want coffee, as the taste of tea becomes like water.

Coffee with sugar is death for me, I get tummy aches, loose weight etc. It kills the bitterness, that I need (in Chinese thinking). Coffee without sugar is fine.

Mercola has some articles for coffee. He recommends one cup a day, of course, only organic and freshly grounded, in the morning, or even BEFORE exercising (if my memory is good) as it can increase exercise benefits.

Another thing the Korean naturopath told me, is that most people he sees, after 2 hours in the computer, their kidneys get shrunk, meaning, their kidney function and energy get shrunk to HALF.

Surprisingly, coming back, I read that dr. K. says exactly the same thing: that EMRs from computers would diminish kidney function considerably.
