Hi everyone

Can you please share with me what you do in order to rebuild your muscles or keep them strong.
I try to exercise a bit every other day but what supplements, food, fruits, can help? Thanks alot.
I have done some research on this forum but couldn't find anything more than L-Glutamate which I am not even sure is a good thing.

I do not suggest L-Glutamate, other than for use in dire situations for stomach tissue repair. Then, it needs to be in small enough amounts - and with other things - so as not to cause excitation of the nerves. Magnesium can counter that characteristic.

L-Glutamate converts in the brain to glutamic acid and that is not always well tolerated by those with neuro-exictability and toxicity issues (as with lyme).

Anyone with myoclonus, irritability, anxiety or a seizure disorder should avoid it, as a supplement, and - sometimes - even limit the amount from foods. Some food have a high content of it.

L-CARNITINE, however, might be something you'd want to take a look at, along with protein from various sources (lean muscle meats raised in good conditions, wild salmon, legumes, plants, nuts).

Also helpful: undenatured whey protein powder, hemp protein powder, chia seeds.

Some non-gluten "grains" that are really more seeds and grass also contain good amounts of protein and complex carbs for energy: Quinoa, Wild Rice, Black Rice, etc.

Those with chronic infections need about 25% more protein to nourish muscles.

(Anyone with kidney disease need to consult a nutritionist regarding protein sources & amount.)

To help avoid kidney problems, it might be good to avoid ibuprofen (as that can really stress the kidneys just as acetaminophen stresses the liver) . . . and be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day.

Magnesium should also be in divided doses, 3 x a day, as if the daily dose it taken all at once, the body can't absorb it and it puts too much strain on kidneys. Divided, with water, works best.

Many of the liver support supplements also help support kidney function but a certified naturopathic doctor or herbalist can tell you more.

Tai Chi; Qi Gong; Pilates - all good exercise programs that can be tailored for your individual needs, at various points in time.

Deceiving gentle, each of these can be astoundingly powerful at helping the body develop strength, breath, balance and endurance.

Weight training can also help but if you have wrist problems or other joint pain, this may make that worse. If you have any joint issues, consult a trainer for braces or special techniques if you still want to use weight equipment.

Tai Chi; Qi Gong; Pilates - and some water exercises, and even just walking - are low impact so as not to stress already inflamed joints.

Rebounding (on a rebounder, or mini-trampoline) is also an option. Just don't try to fly to the sky. Gentle is key. It's better to do it 3 x day for one minute than to overdo it by trying 3 minutes at once.

To start learning more about L-Carnitine, search Google for:

L-Carnitine, lyme

From that comes Acetyl L-Carnitine, too. Lots of hits to consider.

You might first consult with your LLMD - or if you want to research some first - at least be sure to consult with your LLMD before adding anything.

Keebler, so happy to see you again!!!
As usual your advice are priceless.
Also, for someone who has polymyositis, do you think exercise during a flare is a good thing? I mean wuld create more harm or would it offer som benefit?
