Astaxanthin -

Most Powerful Nutrient Ever Discovered for Eye Health

- by Joseph Mercola, D.C. - | November 23 2010

Excerpt:

. . . This carotenoid is called astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin is produced by the microalgae Haematoccous pluvialis when its water supply dries up, forcing it to protect itself from ultraviolet radiation.

Astaxanthin is leaps and bounds more powerful than beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, lycopene and lutein; other members of its chemical family.

Astaxanthin exhibits VERY STRONG free radical scavenging activity, and protects your cells, organs and body tissues from oxidative damage. . . .

I was told that if you take the astaxanthin with coconut oil, you will get more absorption into the bloodstream. Same with turmeric, the coconut oil makes it more bioavailable.

The coconut oil helps the astaxanthin cross the blood brain barrier and do good things up in the brain, too.

It's good stuff. I take BioAstin.

I have taken it in the morning for about 6 months. Can't say I notice much difference but I am on ABX and slowly getting better!

I will start taking Coconut Oil with it. I usually take Coconut Oil later in the morning when I am drinking my hot tea.

All the Best, MattH

Matt,

Sorry you've not seen improvement with Astaxanthin. Wonder if just once a day is enough? And, with most treatment protocols, it is hard to know what's helping because it's just so murky.

chaps,

Thanks for the BioAstin name - and for the detail about coconut oil.

Just stumbled upon these two links:

Neuroprotective Effects of Astaxanthin

. . . Some other nutraceuticals have begun to attain a certain level of fame for having beneficial properties for the brain.

But due to Astaxanthins superior antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as a recent flurry of research in this area, indications are that it is superior to all other nutraceuticals for brain health.

There is substantial evidence that most diseases associated with the brain are the result of oxidation and/or inflammation. Astaxanthin is a superior antioxidant that is safe, natural and proven. . . .

Keebler,

So let's test your idea.

I am taking the Healthy Origins Astaxanthin, 4mg. For the next 30 days I will take 2 softgels in the morning and 2 later in the day.

So about the middle of June let's see if I notice any difference.

Not really scientific but it will be interesting to see if I am just not taking enough to notice any effects.

All the Best, MattH

Careful, not for people with shellfish allergies!!!

Sixgoofykids, Excellent catch of that shellfish detail.

That important note is in the fine print somewhere but it can be glanced over.

Also, even for those who do well with it, it may be good to not take this everyday - and alternate from time to time.

Sometimes, by eating the same foods every single day, an allergy can develop down the road. Some health professionals suggest a 3-day rotation, that is if you eat eggs on Monday, wait three days before making them another meal.

There are hundreds of different antioxidants available from foods and key supplements. Variety is key.

Matt,

I can't say about dose so just check with the reputable sources on that but, usually, 2 - 3 times a day works best for most supplements that are food based.

Hope it helps. You might want to alternate at least 2 days a week with another antioxidant (such as bilberry or barberry, etc.), though. And, now and then, stay off it for a week or so.

I just started this last week (4 mg). Apparently biopure just came out with a 4mg product.

I notice when I don't take it 2x per day I have a lot of snap, crackle and pop in my neck and joints in the evening. To me that means it's working fairly well as an anti-inflammatory and I need to be taking it 2X per day. I've started with 1 4mg pill then up to 2x per day and next I will increase the dose if warranted.

FYI My ND said to work the dose up slowly.

Zyflamend is really good too...VERY.

Mercola recommends I think 8-10 mg of this supplement a day. I just take vitacost NSI brand 10 mg day and it has helped with inflammation.
