I am starting these two new meds today (having been on minocycline and rifabutin) LLNP wants me to take ABX with full meals even though directions say otherwise.

In the past, I would always take my supplements with meals. Now I am not sure when to take the supplements. Any suggestions?

I took rifampin twice daily....on an empty stomach. Doxy I took with food. Rifampin is supposed to be taken on an empty stomach.

The rifampin and doxy I took around breakfast and dinner time. The supplements I would take mid morning, lunch time, mid afternoon and bed time.

Good luck,
Timaca

I recently had the same question.

Dr. has daughter taking it with the doxy with food.

I guess I am going to need to see what works best for me. My LL NP said to take both rifampin and doxy with a FULL meal even though directions say otherwise. (She knows because she suffered from Lyme herself)

I just didn't know how to space my supplements out with that in mind - and I will not see her for another few weeks. I have decided to take the supplements that counteract with these ABX mid-day (magnesium, multi and calcium).

Hopefully, I will still get the benefit of the ABX with this plan.

I took Doxy and Rifampin both with food.

My LLMD said that, yes, it does reduce the bioavailability somewhat, but most Lyme patients cannot tolerate antibiotics on an empty stomach.

So, if you're getting 70% of the medicine in your system with food on your stomach, as opposed to 0% if you get so sick and vomit it up on an empty stomach, then I'd take it with food.

I took my antibiotics with a meal and supplements with a snack.

I have four large snacks a day and take it like this: antibiotics, probiotic, antibiotics, probiotic. I take antifungal herbs along with the antibiotics.

I originally started out with the rifampin on an empty stomach, but didn't feel well, and it was too difficult timing my meds and supplements. I felt like I was living/breathing meds & supplements and revolving around them. So I checked with the pharmacist.

My pharmacist said that people should ALWAYS take antibiotics with food, regardless of what the drug instructions say. I asked her if that was the case for ALL antibiotics, and she said, yes.

She said that the advice on the drug labels are recommendations by the manufacturers, but the drugs themselves should always be taken with food.

Pharmacists have more training on medications than doctors do. I listen to them (fabulous resource).

So I ended up taking both with food and made great improvement on them (felt like I turned the corner). It was also easier to take my other supplements at lunch and snack time.
