I just found out that this drug is part of the ouinilone family like cipro. I am really concerned about being floxed by this and wondering if anyone has had permenant damage frOm this drug. Also can the quinilones cause permenant anxiety or mood disorders? Please tell me your experiences

I'm worried about this too. I know there is a risk for permanent eye damage with plaquenil. However, a lot of people take it for many years for things like RA without a problem.
I may be starting this too so I look forward to responses.

I took Plaquenil on and off for several years.
I did not have any side effects.
I went to the ophthalmologist and had my eyes checked and there were no problems. I know people taking these drugs need to have their eyes checked. Here is one source:
Funny story: Every time I went to the pharmacy to pick up my Plaquenil, the pharmacist would say "have a nice trip"....and I would tell him why I was on the meds....didn't matter.."have a nice trip!"

The only thing I knew it could affect the eyes I thought it was an anti malaria drug

I've taken plaquenil for over 9 years with no problems. It was prescribed by 3 different doc and no one ever brought up mood issues, just the eyes. Mine have been fine.
Plaquenil has been wonderful for me. I believe I have been able to work full time because of it.

I have taken it for over a year with no problems. I know a couple of people with Lupus who have taken it for many years, again with no problems. I have a very complete opthamalogic exam done every six months, just to make sure my eyes are fine.
I had not heard of permanent mood or cognitive disorders. Plaquenil has worked well for me.

I just googled planquinil side effects and found the mood changes part because it is in the same family as the quinilones I will see if I can find the link

I don't believe that this is correct. It is related to the quinine malaria drugs. I don't believe that you can be "floxed" by it.
Which is not to say that you can't have a bad reaction to it! I had a horrible reaction to it, and it WAS like being on an LSD trip for a week straight---horrible! But then it was gone.
When I was coming out of the herx/reaction, my husband reminded me that I had the same reaction to another antimalarial in the same class decades ago (given then for parasites). It's now off the market. Lots of people had LSD like reactions to that one (Atabrine).

You guys are right I spoke to my pharmicist and it isn't in the same family as cipro or levaquin it is an anti milarial. Hey rumigirl do you think your reaction to the planquinil was from a die off or drug reaction?

I've been on Plaquenil pretty consistently for 14 months.
I had to decrease the dose early on due to itching, but I was able to increase it again once my allergies were better managed. We also stopped it during a trial of something more natural, but the natural product didn't work for me.
Anyway....I love Plaquenil. It dramatically helps my pain and fatigue.
I have treatment resistant anxiety and depression and I haven't felt any worse on it.
I've seen two opthalmologists since I've been on it and they both said that the eye problems are very rare. That is, they've only seen a few cases in their entire careers and they were in people who had been on Plaquenil for 30+ years.

Hey coco have you ever treated the Bart and babs and I'f you have those is it possible you do have Lyme and therefore the treatment resistant anxiety and depression , just a thought.What have you done to treat the anxiety and depression. Do you see an llmd. Thanks for the reassurance about the planquenil

What do you mean lymeto? About tolerating another drug more easily? I haven't actually tried the planq yet
