My recent dexa scan results indicate that osteopenia/bone mineral loss is progressing and that there is a 6.3% decrease in the femoral neck bmd versus 1.6% decrease in the spine and -0.6 in the hip.

The report states that the "bone mineral density determination of the spine and total hip are discordant of uncertain etiology".

Anyone else have this discrepancy in bone loss between one area and another?

Would appreciate hearing what you have done to reverse your bone loss.

Please list diet/supplement/exercise strategies that have worked for you or have been recommended by your doctor.

Thank you.
JJ

Mine had a recent decrease, so my Dr has me on Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3.

he says it reverses it!

Strontium is also supposed to help.

The person doing my scan asked before doing it if I was on Vit D,K calcium or strontium,

She said that I was the only one who had ever said yes to strontium.

In spite of that though, I still had osteopenia, but couldn't compare it to previous one because it was done by two different machines and the results were apples and oranges. I was so disapointed to not be able to tell if there was at least a little improvement.

I know I'm not on my feet enough doing weight bearing exercise.

My DH was taking Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and medication for osteoporosis, and still losing bone mass (due to long-term steroid use for an allergy-related gastrointestinal disease).

When he quit the osteoporosis drug and started taking Cod Liver Oil, and started hiking in the mountains on weekends, he saw an 11% bone density increase in 1 year.

We credit the fish oil and exercise for the difference; the osteoporosis medication only made him feel sick (severe stomach pain) and never did help his bones.

Oh, he also started taking MSM to help offset the sulfur blocking from the steroids, and noticed it helped his joints to not hurt so much, and helped his skin get stronger again (steroids thin & weaken the skin).

my mother has a friend who totally reversed it with progesterone creme. There is a book about it, but I'll have to ask her what it is and get back to you.

I know she said you have to give it atleast 6 months to start seeing any difference, but it's worth a try.

My Mom reversed hers with Progesterone cream, D3 drops and K2.

Calcium supps did nothing for her for years.

Look up Dr. Lee's book on hormones and progesterone, can't remember the name at the moment.

Thank you all for your helpful responses!

Lymetoo: What brand of K2 and D3 do you take?

Razzle, what brand of cod liver oil does your DH take?

jlcd1 & TS96, thanks for the heads up on progesterone cream I will check it out.

Six thanks for the name of Dr. Lee's book, I will try to get it.

Is anyone else using progesterone cream? Wondering if it would not a good idea for someone with fibrocystic breasts?

Marz, strontium is also something I am thinking of using.....what brand do you use? Does it have any side effects?

Posted by JJ29 (Member # 5288) on :

Marz, have not used strontium yet......just started exploring the possibility.....would appreciate hearing from someone who has been using it for a while.

Be sure to talk with your doctor before you start any supplements. Make sure that there are no possible interactions with your current medications.

Be especially careful with strontium. After researching it myself, I found that it can bind to and chelate many medications (including quinolone antibiotics).

Thanks, Kelmo......can you tell me a little more about your experience with progesterone cream.......did your llmd or gyno prescribe it and is it compounded etc?

Thanks, Razzle for the name of the cod liver oil.

Sammy, thanks for the heads up about possible interactions with meds.......will be starting another round of abx and this is definitely something I should look into.

I've been taking Strontium and Vit K2 for 5 years.

I researched them myself. The docs around here had never heard of them.

So far so good. I don't take lyme medications because i use my GB4000 rife machine (electromedicine) to keep the microbes down.

I take dozens of supplements, but not cod liver oil or progesterone. I just heard something really bad about cod liver oil, i forget what.

PS I think i may have heard that codliveroil actually causes bone fractures or something like that.

Strontium and Progesterone cream and drops did not help me. Also, with strontium, you must take calcium supps. and I was taught that they are hamful and go into your soft tissues and arteries instead of bones. Calcium should be obtained from food. Progesterone at low dose made my breasts swollen and painful and caused awful chocolate cravings, despite blood tests showing I had a borderline low level of it.

10,000 units of D3 daily plus 5 prunes daily is reversing it, according to my last Dexa. The D3 alone did not reverse it. I have no idea why or how, but recent research has shown that prunes can prevent bone loss!

Also, my Osteopenia was originally caused by taking a PPI, plus menopause. When I found this out and went off the PPI my bones did not get any worse until 13 years later when I was ordered to take a PPI again. Then my bones got worse and I went off it again, against doctors orders. Now my bones are improving, as noted above.

Klutzo, do you remember how the prunes help with osteoporosis? Is there a certain nutrient that helps build bones? I'm extremely interested in this! Thanks [Smile]

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/08/110818093048.htm

I did a quick Google search and found that prunes aka "dried plums" are used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. There appears to be good scientific data to back it up. Above is one article that summarizes well.

You need to eat approx 10 prunes per day to get the amount used in the study mentioned above. I may try this. I don't want anymore broken vertebrae!!!

Klutzo----- You said that calcium goes into your soft tissues and arteries instead of your bones.

---- That's why people need to take Vitamin K2, which escorts the Calcium into the bones and keeps it out of the heart arteries!

I take Vit K2-7 pills.

Vit K2 is found naturally in egg yolks, liver, cow butter, and certain aged cheeses such as Emmenthal.

I just got finished with a book by Dr. Sircus... about sodium bicarbonate. From memory, he states that the blood has to stay at a slightly alkaline PH of 7.36, give or take a tenth of a point.

Mold, yeasts, heavy metals, viruses, bacteria all work to make the body more acidic so they can live peacefully in our bodies. When I first started checking my urine and saliva PH... I was a 5.5

So, from what I got from the book... when the body fluids are acidic (lower than 7.0) the blood is fighting to stay slightly alkaline so it pulls bicarbonate from the bones to provide the alkalinity it needs.

Putting this all together... the chronically ill are oftentimes chronically acidic in PH. How long can the blood stay at 7.36 when the body fluids are 4.5-5.5 without us feeling the effects in our bones?

Thank you guys for your helpful and interesting info!

Pamoisondelune.....what improvement have you seen on your dexa scan results during the 5 years that you have been taking strontium and K2?

What brand of strontium and K2 do you take and how do you take them?

With regard to strontium, I was listening to one of Dr. Ronald Hoffman's recent podcasts (he's an internist and complementery md in NYC) yesterday in which he endorsed the use of strontium for bone building.......he said that Europeans have been using
this product for many years without a problem.

However, Dr. Hoffman mentioned that strontium has a tendency to inflate the positive dexa scan results......he said that one can counter this by dividing the percentage of positive improvement by half in order to get the correct percentage of improvement.

Klutzo, how long did you take 10,000 IU's of D3 and prunes before you saw improvement on your dexa scan? What brand of D3 did you use?

I too have read the study re prunes and just started eating 5-10 prunes a day.....the only concern I have is that they may contribute to yeast.

Your info re PPI's possibly causing your osteopenia is very interesting, and something for all of us to keep in mind.

Sammy, thank you for posting the link to the study about prunes......I hope and pray that you will not suffer anymore broken bones......I'm so so sorry about what you have been going through.

Momlyme, very interesting info! I will check my urine PH.....does Dr. Sircus recommend supplementing with sodium bicarbonate if the ph is below 7.36?

Strontium is not a silver bullet; i've read that.

I found personally that i have to do EVERYTHING on the action list to reverse bone loss.

One 6-month stretch i did everything on the list: the 20-min jog, the Strontium, VitK2, calcium , Magnesium, Boron, manganese, Vit D3,----- yet i still lost bone!

So i queried the www.osteopenia3.com website. They suggested that i might try wearing a 10-lb weighted vest for one hour per day. I did, (in addition to everything else), and the next 6-month time period i gained bone!

So everything on my list was NOT ENOUGH---- i had to add one more!

Valerie Goldschmidt has a (natural) anti-osteoporosis program WITHOUT Strontium. I haven't looked at her program yet online, but i should.

Dried prunes are high in boron, which could explain why they are good for the bones.
