My doctor has just prescribed zithromax for anaplasma. I had to go to 8 different doctors in 18 months to even find someone who bothered to test for it (and yes, I was seeing LLMDs--4 of them before the current one).

The pharmacy dispensed only 6 of the 30 tabs that were prescribed. Why? Because the insurance company says there's no evidence that it works. They're fine with paying for it, but only if I'm willing to jump through hoops.

Specifically, I can get the drug only if I make a trip to the pharmacy every 6 days to pick up a new supply of 6 tablets, for which I'll pay a $7.62 co-pay each time. This means that in 30 days I'll have to make 5 trips to the pharmacy and pay $7.62 five times (total $38). Or--I can get all 30 tabs at once if I pay out of pocket. In that case it will cost $205.

It's not enough to be so sick you can hardly get out of bed, and to take 18 months plus trips to 8 doctors just to get a diagnosis. Now I have to play games with the insurance company? I haven't even been able to drive for almost 18 months, but I'm supposed to get to the pharmacy every 6 days?!

Has anyone else had this problem and found a way to deal with it? I'm sure I can order from overseas, but I did that once and the shipping fees and international credit card charges were ridiculous, plus it took almost a month to arrive.

My insurance will cover ten pills a month so that is all I am taking. I am paying a dollar per pill.
