Has any one taken any brand rifampin that isn't red in color? CVS has not been able to find one.
In the past, I have broken out in a rash from things like benedry, sudafed, zythro... It doesn't happen right away, but if I take it daily for a while... Figued it out when rash got worse on benydryl... And i would get one when i was taking sudafed round the clock. My rash's have gotten much fewer since I have had my sudafed compounded and just avoid red dye as much as possible.
But I seem much less allergic since I have been treating... (I suspect my rashes are/ were Lyme related). Is rifampin worth the risk? I should say these are no small rashes... They start on my arms and legs and then move to the other..very red, angry and itchy and they usually last 2 months even after what ever I took is discontinued. They often look like bullseye rashes on steroids.
I wonder if I can get rifampin compounded?

I'm pretty sure it isn't dye but the color of the antibiotic. I read it somewhere. I think that is why it only comes in red, or orange for the 150's.

I've posted this ,maybe 6 times..
couldn't do the change to 300 red Rifampin..docs said allergic to med. that didn't set right with me because i had taken 150. and was fine..BUT
it has to be the orange pill..
SANDOZ, 150 orange cap..there is one other but I'm to tired to go look
with sandoz,150 I kept kids liquid benadryl close by just in case// didn't have to use it

Hubby had it compounded once -- he thought maybe he was reacting to the dye. We called the manufacturer and there was no medical reason for adding in the red dye.
I would think any compounding pharmacy should be able to make compounded rifampin in whatever strength you wanted without the dye. If I remember correctly it was a white powder.

Well,my doctor said the medicine is red naturally. She wants me to open it up and start with 1/2 mixed in apple sauce and work up to a whole capsule (opened and mixed with apple sauce) twice a day....
I have never been more apprehensive of taking a medicine as I am about starting rifampin.

The rifampin itself is naturally reddish brown in color. I think that the commercially made products also add dyes to the capsule and other ingredients to the powder.
If you want pure rifampin, you have to get it compounded.
The first time I had my daughters compounded, they put it in a white capsule. I made them do it over because I didn't want the titanium dioxide that is in the white capsule.
I told them that the point of compounding it is to avoid all the extra junk that the pharmaceutical companies use.
