For example Evolve plain Kefir has 10G of sugar and 14G of carbs in 1 cup.

Is this still alright to take? It just hit me how much sugar is in there! Seems like a reverse Salt protocol if one takes 1 cup a day & that we would feed the Spiro's.

I make Kefir using the powdered starter.
I realize that making it with the grains results in a better product, but this is so easy.

I've bought it from iHerb and from Amazon.
Both sites have reviews for it.

I purchased Kefir grains from Amazon and have been making my own for months. I use skim milk. I tried making it with coconut milk, but did not like the taste. (I like plain coconut milk).

You only need a few ounces per day for kefir to help you according to Dr. B. I use about 4 oz per day in smoothies. The flavored kefirs that you buy in the grocery stores do have much more sugar.

Can you make kefir with almond milk? Also, does anyone have a "tried and true" recipe that they can share for their kefir?

I use a canning jar. I put the grains (about a heaping tablespoon) at the base of the jar and then add milk to fill about 2/3 of the jar. I cover the jar with a clean dish cloth and a loose rubber band.

I let it sit on the counter in a cool place for a day or two. It will start to thicken.

For the finished product, here is what you need. A glass measuring cup - 8 cups is best but 4 is okay. A small mesh strainer, a wooden spoon and another clean glass jar.

I take a wooden spoon and stir the kefir that has been setting. I put the strainer over the measuring cup and slowly pour the kefir into the measuring cup stirring with the spoon to separate the grains from the kefir.

When the liquid has all been strained through the strainer, take the remaining grains and start a new batch. Pour the kefir you have just sifted into a clean jar and refrigerate.

If you are making more kefir than you can use, just refrigerate the grains until you are ready to make. The grains will double over time and are great to share with others or put in smoothies. [lick]

You can try this with other types of milk besides dairy, but I found that I did not like the outcome...

When I initially come to this forum, everyone touted that Kefir was a great probiotic. It was mentioned not to buy the flavored Kefir & to get the plain one instead.

Even Latta Russian Kefir has 12G Carbs & 12G of Sugar. I think ALL store bought Kefir has sugar then?

Regular whole milk has about 12G of Carbs & Sugar. Is this a small enough amount, where one can have a glass a day or are we still trying to be on or close to zero as possible?

A LaYogur probiotic has 30G of carbs & 26G of sugar & it is not even a cup full (6 OZ). When campared to yogurt, Kefir is by far the lesser evil.

If you make your own Kefir with Milk, I would imagine it would have sugars too. How much sugar does homemade Kefir have, not using milk? Do we know?

I used to make my own kefir. I used the grains from kefirlady.com .... great kefir. No sugar. I put some berries and vanilla whey protein in it for flavor.

The kefir grains feed off the sugar in the milk, so there's not much of a way to know how much sugar is left in the kefir. I'm sure whatever is left is offset by the benefit of the probiotics. Homemade kefir from grains has over 35 strains. Store bought only has 10.

I agree. For me personally, ALL store bought yogurt and kefir is counterproductive. All it does is create more yeast for me.

As long as U buy the plain kefir, you'll be fine.
I prefer Lifeway over Evolve. It is a bit more $ but I think it tastes better.
Then again, only the Lifeway brand, was available (Hanaford's) when i was doing Kefir during my recovery period.
Market Basket here in the New England area, does carry kefir now.
Don't buy the flavored stuff as it has lotsa sugar.

Plain yogurt and plain kefir still contain about 16g of milk sugar.

Even with nothing added, most foods with natural sugars do best with a fat and protein with or near it so that the glycemic index (glucose absorption) will be better stabilized for hours ahead.

Nuts would fill both fat and protein need.
