I just got my test results yesterday at my LLMD appointment. It says I have two copies of the same mutation (A1298C/A1298C). My LLMD doesn't think I have any issues with detoxing and/or methylation, but someone else has told me otherwise.

My Vitamin B12 levels were also very high (1820). Is this related to MTHFR? Am I "in the clear" as far as this detox issue goes? I'm still confused on the test results.

Check out http://mthfr.net/ for more info on this mutation.

Basically, you need 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (or methylfolate) instead of regular Folic Acid because the mutation makes it more difficult for your body to convert Folic Acid into the active, useable form.

This means that methylation in your body (and thus glutathione production, and thus detoxification) may be impaired.

The elevated B12 may be due to the methylation being shut down by the MTHFR mutation.

Suggest, though, that B12 be supplemented in the methyl-cobolamin or hydroxy-cobolamin form along with the methylfolate, because when methylation is re-started, it will likely use up the excess B12...

Thanks for the information. How much methylfolate would I need to take per day?

I don't know - it may be different for everyone (my personal opinion). So start with a small dose - if tablets, cut them in quarters. If capsules, dump the powder out of the capsule and take 1/4 of the powder. This would be a starting dose. Slowly increase to whatever dose is recommended on the bottle.

Be aware that it is not unusual to have some detoxification-related flare up of some symptoms...binders and other detox aides (bath soaks, castor oil packs, drink extra water, etc.) can help with this.

If the detox symptoms get to be too severe, stop the methylfolate for a few days to a week to let the body catch up with the detox.

Some may need to take a dose of the methylfolate every other day, or even as little as once a week to start with...just so their body gets past the detox at a pace that is tolerable.

I am one who has a horrible time with the methylfolate, so my LLMD just told me to take 2 400 mcg tabs every 3rd day along with my B12 injection. I was trying to take 800 mcg per day and it was too much for my body to handle.

I have two copies of the other "C" gene.

Some people can handle a huge amount in the form of Deplin (a prescription form of methylfolate), but when I took that at first, I was in screaming pain with awful restlessness/anxiety. So that's when my LLMD said I can just take 800 mcg.

I now take a B6 complex vitamin every 3rd day with both methylfolate and B12 in it and I do b12 injections. I seem okay/better with that, but still feel off on those days.
