I am only on day 2 of rifampin and feel this med is going to be too difficult for me. This is my second time attempting to take it. the last time was several months ago.

I hate the way it interacts with my other meds and just feel awful on it and I am only at 1/2 dose. I need something else to use along with doxy for bart. I want to stay away from flouroquinilones if possible.

I did much better on rifabutin than I did on rifampin. I took it with minocycline.

Below is what is written in Truth About Lyme site

http://www.truthaboutlymedisease.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=313

"Bartonella also known as cat-scratch fever is a bacterial infection. Symptoms include swollen, painful lymph nodes, muscle and/or joint pain, nausea, vomiting, chills, anxiety, insomnia, red rashes that resemble stretch marks. Treatment is often Levaquin or Rifampin, Biaxin or Azithromycin. Septra/Bactrim has shown in some cases to be effective."

I also took rifabutin and handled it better.

Unfortunately after 4 months on it my WBC has really dropped so they took me off of it.

I use bactrim/biaxin for bart. That hit me harder than Rifampin did with herxing though.

It took 1 month to work up to the 1/2 dose. I was

on 1/4 dose. The drug isn't easy but on day 10 I

did start feeling a little better. I'm on day 3 of

half dose and herxing!

On the last leg of my treatment my doc wants to try rifampin, so I'm interested in what you have to say. I tried it 4 years ago, and it knocked me out. It's good to know I can titer up.

Ellen... how much Rifampin are you taking?

I am supposed to take one twice a day. right now I am only taking the evening dose. I already feel like its messing with my thyroid med and my estrogen.

What are your symptoms? I have been on Rifampin twice and both times it made me VERY sleepy for the first week. It was a different feeling from my "normal" fatigue. I checked and that's a side effect.

I am also taking rifabutin with seemingly zero side-effects.

I thought Levaquin worked great for bart but I developed the tendon issue with it so was changed to rifabutin.

I am trying to figure out the difference between rifabutin and rifampin. Does anyone know?
