Is malarone just as good as mepron? My dr said malarone is a cheaper alternative to mepron. Thank you guys!

I believe that Mepron is stronger than Malarone (they share a common ingredient but there is more of it in Mepron).
Everyone is different in how they respond to meds. I have a stubborn case of Babs. Malarone has never helped, but Mepron has.
It is always worth trying Malarone to see if it helps you.

I would echo Sammi's sentiments.
Malarone has proguanil in it in adition to atovaquone (the active ingredient in Mepron); however, Mepron has considerably more atovaquone than Malarone.
I have had success with Mepron but not with Malarone; however, as you know, it is different for everyone!
If I recall correctly, Malarone has gone generic explaining why it would be a cheaper alternative to Mepron.

Ok thank you. Is there anyone who has had success with malarone. I want to do this right. I guess we don't know what works until we try it.

I have been switched from Mepron to Malarone. I herxed MUCH faster with Malarone (within 48 hours). There was a break between the two, so I know there was no additional Mepron in my system.
I take a high dose of Malarone, with the explicit goal of reaching the same dose of atovaquone as I was getting in the Mepron.

For me mepron worked when malarone didnt. I too tried the malarone because of the cost of mepron but had to take the mepron anyway

That sounds like a good idea if it is effective and you can tolerate it. What does your doctor say about all that extra proguanil? Any problems with it?

Yes and if you take higher doses of malarone wouldn't it end up costing more anyway?

I don't think so. There is a pretty substantial price difference between Mepron and generic Malarone. Of course a lot of it depends on your insurance situation and all that, but I think the malarone would be considerably cheaper both short term and long term.

I asked my dr the same question. Mepron works better for some, and for others Malarone works better. The two medicines are absorbed differently.
LLMD's are finding Mepron resistant strains of babs. After a year of treatment and significant improvement on Mepron, it stopped working all my symptoms came back. I'm now back to square one.
Malarone is significantly cheaper - amount won't make a difference. I wish you much luck!
