For b. duncani, I am supposed to take a week of zith and then add Mepron.
Background: I can't take macrolides due to a bad liver reaction years ago to erythromycin. Zith is supposed to be less likely to do that, so I wanted to try it.
First try on zith - liver area pain, nausea, loss of appetite. Liver enzymes normal. Pain went down with two mini GB flushes, visceral manipulation, acupuncture, ALA/NAC, and lots of beet smoothies.
Tried again, a single tab of zith. Upper right quadrant pain again. Small shooting pains in liver area, larger pain in a few spots, nausea, and cognitive and emotional symptoms. I felt so bad I cleaned out my cabinet at work because I wondered if I would be back!
What is going on? Is it a herx, a complete intolerance, or stirring something else up? I entertained the possibility of liver parasites, but if it's that, why would a tiny dose of zith cause so much trouble when a half dose of biltricide did not?
This is the only abx we can pair with mepron for me, so I really want to make sure before giving it up. Another idea was to ramp it up slowly. Since my URQ is still hurting some, I am wary.
Please share your experience.
Other meds: Omnicef, probiotics, sida acuta, cat's claw, supps. IV pending.

Also, in first try of azith, got more tolerable herxy stuff like burning in nasal passages, inflammation in larynx/thyroid area - so it was hitting something, even at 4 days half dose.

I wish I could help you treeinatree. I was able to tolerate zithromax while taking mepron, but it contributed to me going deaf in one ear. I switched to Biaxin and was told that mepron would work well with this med.
Another possibility is minocycline. I remember reading somewhere that if you could not tolerate zithromax or biaxin, that this combination might work. I would definitely speak to your LLMD about this.
Have you tried cryptolepis or artemesinin?

Come to think of it, I have new ringing in ears...better tell LLMD...
I can't take Biaxin. Minocycline maybe, but I try to avoid things that inhibit and require CYP450 3A4, and Mino does both I think.
LLMD said artemesinin has a rep for being hard on the liver. I haven't tried it. Very interested in cryptolepis, and it looks like it may be available in US again now.
Thing is, has ANYONE had success with using cryptolepis or artemesinin instead of the antibiotic to pair with Mepron? The point of adding an antibiotic to Mepron is because Mepron alone showed more recurrence, right?

I would like to know the same about cryptolepis. I have read that artemesinin can cause horrible tinnitus so I have stayed away from it.

Hi, I heard some in Santa Cruz area had success with just one base antibiotic like Mino, Doxy, or Zithromax and (Artemisinin with grapefruit seed extract) OR (Artemisinin with heparin). You can have your LLMD or another doctor check your liver enzymes while doing the art. The art is supposed to be pulsed 2-5 days. Then you can rotate to crypto if you like.

Mlg - this is azith used as a pair with Mepron. Are you saying that person used mino, doxy, or zith plus the other stuff listed, as something to pair with Mepron, to treat babesia? Or just that the person was using that combo for Lyme? Tree

Have you tried castor oil packs for liver pain? They always worked well for hubby.

Plus cholestyramine, coffee enema, and after the first round of pain, one glutathione IV push.

It looks like that has a comparable risk of acute liver injury to erythromycin. Thank you for the suggestion.
