Did an IV by my wrist last week and now I have a bad bruise ring around it. A little worried with how bad it looks.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Yes, it usually always happens to me, too. I have a bleeding disorder, so I attribute it to that plus weak veins.

Have you been checked for bleeding disorders?

Do you take plenty of Vitamin C? Vitamin C deficiency can also predispose to easy bruising and fragile blood vessels.

"Do you take plenty of Vitamin C?"

LOL yes, the IV had 50g of vit C

I have not been checked for bleeding disorders.
What tests?

I have not had bruising from IVs, but have had deep bruises from simple blood draws when the phlebotomist was less skilled. It can look awful. That's not to say that you shouldn't ask your provider about clotting issues, though.

The following link summarizes the tests to investigate bleeding disorders. Not all tests are needed for everyone with suspected bleeding issues.

I have to give blood regularly to keep my iron levels in control. I have found the size of the bruise is greatly dependent on how tightly the phlebotomist makes the compression bandage.

When I get a band-aid I get a huge bruise. When I get vet-wrap no bruise at all.

Like terv, I have seen brusing after blood draw when the pressure on the site was not maintained for some time afterwards. If the bandage/cotton with stretchy stuff is not tight, then I would try to keep my arm in an upright position, raised from the elbow to keep blood from pooling, and hold firm pressure on the bandage for 10 minutes or so. That usually helped prevent bruising.

Ditto with the stretchy wrap. I had several blue-black bruises after a couple of blood draws. After my iron levels were checked and they were negligible, this explained the bruising. Make sure you have enough iron on board. I take ferrous glucconate.
