FDA warns one brand of vitamin B supplement contains dangerous steroids

(CNN) -- Federal regulators warned consumers to avoid one brand of vitamin B dietary supplement because it contains potentially harmful anabolic steroids.
Preliminary lab tests showed the product, Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50, contains methasterone, a controlled substance, and dimethazine, the Food and Drug Administration said. . . .
. . . The product manufactured by New-York based Mira Health Products Ltd is sold online and in stores. The company has not issued a response to the warning.

There may be more to this (there always is, and it could be a "highjacked" or isolated batch - or an unforeseeable sourcing error).
The company may have just been alerted and should have detail very soon, I would think.

That's weird. I hope this isn't just a campaign to get rid of supplements (again).

- I know. That was my first thought, too. I would not put much past those who want to ban supplements.
Call me skeptical but the fact that the news was issued on a Saturday seems odd. The company won't be able to respond for at least two days.
Surely, the agency that issued this report knew about it yesterday. The company would have been able to reply then.
On various fronts, this could be an isolated case of product sabotage. The lot numbers (or other identifying bottle codes) were not included in the news article, which is unusual.
Still, just in case someone may have this brand, they'd want to stop (and save the bottle) until this can be figured out and the company has a chance to respond. -

Makes me suspicious because why would they have even thought to check for methasterone and dimethazine?

Still, I would think they would have reported it to the company who would have then checked to be sure there was no compromise in their line.
Lots of questions.
There was a similar situation to this with a different supplement about a year ago. But that other company was far less than quality, in my opinion. -

Called MIRA, what I thought was the main company (according to the article above). It has been recalled but the man I talked with (the manager who was put on the phone after the receptionist seemed lost)
said that Healthy Life Chemistry was delayed in their recall. He said that finally, today, he understands it has been recalled.
This goes back to May 2012 - not new at all. He said MIRA has done all they needed to with the FDA at every step but Health Life did not.
Bottom line, according to MIRA spokesperson is that, yes, this particular vitamin was contaminated with steroids.
I asked where I might find their response to this, at a particular link and, twice, got the run-a-round. I suppose it might be at the FDA site but I have no desire to take this any further. I've never taken this brand.
He ended my call suddenly, "have to go, someone is waiting for me" so I did not get to wrap this up. More questions about whose company this actually is, supplier vs. distributor, etc. still, THIS particular vitamin should not be taken. Return for refund.
Unclear who / what process was at fault and I would then question all products by anyone connected with this.
Not at all impressed by the person with whom I spoke. He spoke as it he was at the top of the company, though not specifically how. He should have fininshed our conversation instead of cutting me off.
I just wanted information. Not criticizing, just wanted to know what happened and where it all stands. He did not want to help me better understand all that. A "brush off" that has me now with even more questions about anyone connected, in anyway. -
