My husband is administering my rocephin IM shots and after my injections, the liquid medication seems to be leaking back out. There is no blood.
Is anyone experience with this? Are there tips to try?
I am wondering if he is injecting too fast. I am doing 2 grams mixed with about 4 mls lidocaine.
Yes, I can call the nurse, but I have taken so much of their time lately with so many med refills etc...

- Too much was likely put in one place. If the needle is put in all the way at first, shoot out some and then back the needle out just a little bit to shoot more, etc. this may help.
Some may actually move the needle once in for a different angle but that seems like to much digging around.
I had the same trouble when I did a combined 2cc with magnesium and B-12. Just too much liquid to go into the "pocket" so to speak.
Another way is to do two injection sites.
I don't know how much 2 grams + 4 mls would equal in terms of cc's but it does sound like just too much for one single site.
And, once done and the needle is out, "cap" that injection site and very gently massage it so it can distribute. -

What you need to do is create a "z track" with the skin if you google IM injections and z track you will find instructions.
Basically, your husband will tug your skin down when he preps for the injection then after the shot is given when he pulls the needle out, the skin goes back to it's normal setting sealing up the needle track and seals all the medicine in.
So instead of just bracing the skin tight for the shot in a small spot, tug it downward gently and then brace to give the shot. It's easy if it can be shown. I'm afraid that words are confusing. Sorry.
If that doesn't work you may need to rotate to a different site that can accommodate a larger amount.

This happens to me with the Bicillin IM. Make sure that the medication is at room temperature. Make sure that you are rotating your sites.

Thanks for replies!! Super helpful! Now I am informed about the z-track and will put it to use on my son. Kind of freaked out to think of my husband doing that on me. Makes sense though.
