My GP told me to take Prilosec OTC for couple weeks for my hernia pain from taking doxy. Hernia pain and stomach burn, etc.

I may have ulcer and I have had pre-pyloric polyps removed cpl years ago.

I am afraid to take this.

should I be cautious? I am so sensitive and am also now having liver pain that has increases since I stopped my doxy (when pain got too bad from gastro burn, etc)

I am eating very bland, but I just wnat to heal fast.

I remember reading something about if your liver can't detox right then these acid blockers might be bad- or something like that

You just don't want to get hooked on it. I'm now hooked on Nexium and it is murder to get off of. Damaging stuff long term.

In the short term, it will help you. Maybe you could take one every other day for a week??

Someone told me that flax seed oil will heal the tummy.

DGL, slippery elm bark, marshmallow root - all are soothing and healing to the stomach lining.

Prilosec (& related meds) decrease stomach acid, which increases likelihood of Candida and other infections, and also interferes with absorption of many important nutrients (Vitamin B12, Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, etc.).

I wouldn't take the Prilosec if I were you...

ok, something to think about. So prilosec is not a curing drug, but it is only a temporary soother? Or CAN it help with actual healing?

I'm now taking Pepzin GI and Mastic Gum for stomach and small intestine ulcers thanks to fellow Lymenetters.

I was prescribed Prilosec and had the same concern as you.

I found that Doctor's Best PepZin GI was very helpful with reducing reflux.

You can find ingredients and reviews at iHerb.com.
One of the ingredients is zinc, which kills bacteria.

I began taking Berberine the summer of 2012, and after a while I noticed that I didn't need to take the PepZin GI as often.
Then I didn't need it at all.

When I took a six week break from the Berberine during December-January 2013, the reflux started to come back.
Then I woke up while aspirating stomach contents, and I realized I had better restart the Berberine immediately.

I did so, and have not had problems with aspirating since then.

Is there a bacteria in the stomach that causes reflux?
Zinc kills bacteria and Berberine kills bacteria.
However, I've always read that the stomach acid kills bacteria that we ingest.

I don't have reflux. I have constant burning in my stomach and around my back .

The other day I forgot and I ate a 1" piece of pineapple tat burned all the way down and burned my stomach and esophagus for HOURS after. no reflux.

I think it does heal the ulcers, but the natural stuff is worth a shot.

Prilosec reduces stomach acid. That is all it does. It does not heal ulcers. But ulcers take a lot longer to heal if there is a lot of stomach acid irritating the ulcer.

Slippery elm bark & marshmallow root create a soothing, healing coating on the mucus lining of the stomach, buffering the ulcer from stomach acid while it is healing. And the herbs also promote healing.

Ditto to Razzle and many others above who offer excellent (better, safer) ways to approach this, along with diet (avoidance of certain food groups may be in order).

Get assessed for H pylori.

yes, natural I like. I know Keebler- I have phone call in to GI clinic....waiting for them to call me for appointment which will prob be not for another month! ugh.

The only other option I have for all this pain is to go to ER and then I will get 97% of my bill paid by program there. and with the hope that they will be able to scope and see if there is anything brewing in there.

or is there another way to check for H pylori?

I don't know how accurate it is, but google H.pylori blood test. I thought I had heard of one.

You should not have to wait a month to get a test for h. pylori. Anyone with an ulcer should have this test. A scope may not be all that accurate, check out other methods.

"The only other option I have for all this pain is to go to ER and then I will get 97% of my bill paid by program there." (end quote)

Of course, there are emergencies and I've been in the ER for stomach emergencies - that could have been avoided had I known then that I was celiac and gluten nearly killed me (doctors missed that for years, even the "scope" exams were done wrong.

I also could have avoided lots of ulcer pain had I know about DGL and the need to avoid dairy in addition to avoiding gluten. For some, avoiding GMO foods can turn all things around for the better, too.

DGL (and other things mentioned above) can really help calm pain. Diet choices are also a huge help. It is so good to know that there are some things that will help. Hope you find what those are in your case.

Excitotoxins; MSG; Aspartame; & "Natural" Flavors (that are not likely natural at all);

GMO foods that destroy the GI Tract; Gluten; Dairy - and how they can cause pain, etc.

I was tested for celiac twice.

I have a severe gluten allergy, as well as a severe wheat allergy. so I try to avoid both constantly.

I don't do unnatural things like additives, etc.

I didn't know about blood test for H pylori- why didn't my GP do this when I mentioned it to her???? I am calling there right now!

The blood test for h. pylori is very inaccurate...once positive, it will always be positive no matter whether or not you still have an active infection.

Far more accurate is the breath test for h. pylori.

Alternatively, the doctor can aspirate some fluid and take a biopsy from the stomach to test for h. pylori...but go for the breath test, far less expensive and far less invasive.

I just saw that on line- breath test- ok

I've had no problem going on and off omeprazole for short term treatments of bleeding stomach ulcers. (This was 2-3months each)

The omeprazole did make the conditions right so that my stomach could heal.

When I've taken antibiotics that I felt were irritating to my stomach I use DGL to protect and coat my stomach. This helps prevent a new ulcer from forming. My favorite is the Enzymatic Therapy brand extra strength sugar free one, works very well.

You could try taking DGL 20min before your meals and antibiotics. See if that helps prevent symptoms before you take the prilosec.

Carol in PA,

I'm having the same reflux problems at night. Do you suggest taking just Berberine to start or the PepZin GI or both? What is the dose of each?

Thank you...

I talked to dr office and they will not do bloodwork or breath test. They said I must wait for GI apt.

Diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori

It is very important that prior to any breath testing (except serology, i.e. the H.pylori antibody blood test) for H. pylori,

you have not taken any antibiotics or Pepto Bismol /De-Nol for one month, Losec Nexium & other similar Proton Pump Inhibitors for one week, or Pepsid, Zantac, Axid, or Tagamet & other such H2 receptor antagonists for 24 hours before the breath tests are done.

To decide which is the best treatment for H. pylori, it may be necessary to do an endoscopy and take a biopsy (a small piece of tissue) from the lining of the stomach. This allows your doctor to grow your H. pylori in the laboratory and decide which antibiotic to use.

Diagnostic Tests (detail links for each): Breath Tests; Blood Tests; Endoscopy

Try the PepZin first; read the reviews at iHerb.com and at Amazon.com.
I took one PepZin capsule as needed, when I noticed reflux.

As for the Berberine, you need to do alot of reading before you start that.
Keebler has a set of links for it.

I didn't have any problems with Berberine interfering with my other meds.
I worked up to two 500 mg capsules daily for four months, and had good results.
I'm presently taking one 400 mg capsule daily.

The main results with it were a reduction in body and joint pain, and fewer migraines.
My improvement in gastric symptoms was a pleasant surprise.
