Hi, my 2 and a half yr old son is currently in treatment for Lyme. We had him tested because he's had hand and feet pain every day for over a year now.

He is currently on a herbal protocol with a LLND since the start of the year (about 6 weeks now).

Over this 6 week period we haven't noticed any herx/improvement cycles at all. He just seems to have gradually gotten worse.

Before he could get by on one dose of Motrin (mostly during night) and occasional days without Motrin. But now he needs it twice a day nearly every day as the pain is constant and often intense.

I would really like some input on what might be going on - sometimes it's difficult to keep the faith as there has not even been one good day since starting treatment.

Based on your experiences does this look like a gradual die-off reaction or more like the infection is slowly progressing?

I really feel for you with a child affected by this at a young age. There us almost no way of telling if it is a herx or progression, especially since your child would not be able to articulate how he is feeling what is different or what is the same.

I would recommend you start a search for an LLMD who specializes in children while on the herbs. There are a few who trained under Dr J that are around the US. The earlier you fight this full on the better your child will be in the long term.

I wish you and your family all the best. Take care.

It is my understanding that generally children start to improve right away when on good lyme treatment (meaning, with a lyme doctor).

That's what I would expect to see and want to see.

So, I second the suggestion to get him to a good pediatric lyme doctor.

In 6 weeks I would certainly expect improvement. I have heard of children doing better from the very first pill.

What are the herbal treatments?
My theory is most herbs just agitate the bugs.

Agree with above posters. At such a young age the success rate would likely increase even more with a good LLMD.

Natural methods are great and all but Borrelia is a different animal.

My experience (although not at the age 2 1/2)
is that the young children do indeed herx as bacteria die,
and it manifests as behavioral issues.

Also that their gut health is a large factor-
How is his diet? Healthy, sugar free?
A children's quality probiotic is being given?

(Not a Dr., just some thoughts.)

Also be carefull the amount of Motrin, as it is hard on the liver, which is already overtaxed removing lyme toxins.

thanks for the responses.

I am taking him to a LLMD to start abx treatment very soon so he will be on abx and herbs. I plan to get his liver panel checked once in a while - so far all the liver testing has come out normal despite the daily motrin.

The current herbal treatment is several Buhner herbs plus Byron White A-L. He is taking probiotics regularly.

It would be great if I saw an instant end to his pain after starting abx but my gut tells me that's not going to be the case.

Even a symptom reduction for a couple of days once in a while would give me some hope that the treatment is actually doing something - we'll see!

I plan to do abx+herbs until the end of the year - if there's no noticeable improvement by then it will be time to see a rheumatologist.
