I treated 10 years ago and now with my lyme relapse due to stress last summer I think I may have reactivated babesia as well. I am waiting on my Igenex test, but then they are not always accurate.

My question is what is the most current babesia protocols LLMDs are using these days? Is mepron and Zithromax still used? I saw on a Youtube video were Dr. H says they use 2 teaspoons 2 times a day. I've read a lot on primaquine, but do not know much about it. Is it safe?

If you have dosage amount that you can share with me please PM me.

Thank you,
KH

I don't think dosage is allowed on LymeNet. Maybe in a PM.

Mepron/Zyth/Biaxin/Malarone/ART/Clindamycin/
Coartem/A-Babs/Alinia are the things that I have used for Babs.

The notes below are from a talk Dr. H gave a little over 2 years ago now. Hope they help you.

2011 ILADS Conference, Toronto, Canada

Lyme & Babesiosis: Updates on Treatment & Diagnosis 2011

Dr. H 10/28/11

He has 20 years of experience treating lyme; more than 12,000 chronic patients
He was in France and China discussing babesiosis. Talked with Chinese CDC regarding parasites

Some of his patients get better with glutathione alone. It opens up the detox pathways (is an anti-oxidant)

Borrelia miyamotoi is showing up in ticks in Hyde Park, NY. This strain is in Japan. We can’t test for it.

There is a new ehrlichia species also found.

Indicators of bad outcome with babesiosis:

male sex, extremely high WBC

We see blood transfusion babesiosis in California. WA-1 is now in the Northeast U.S.. It is found along the entire eastern seaboard. It is difficult to get a positive test for it. LabCorp has a WA-1 test. The FISH through Igenex is also very useful.

He treats with clindamycin with azithromycin, also Mepron, then malarone. There is lots of Mepron resistance. So, he adds Septra (Bactrim). This works well. Also, he uses much higher doses of Mepron due to the Mepron resistance.

He uses coartem (which has Artemisinin in it) Dosage is 4 twice per day. Take at 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.; then switch to 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. It can be pulsed once per month.

You can’t combine this with any med that affects the QT interval.

Babs is spreading world-wide. Babs also suppresses the immune system (based on a study of b. microti)

Artemisinin is not as effective now as it was in the past. Use art when coartem doesn’t cure the person. He no longer uses ketek.

Beta blockers (blood pressure medicines) control these types of parasites. So, use them as an antagonist. We need a study on this. Heparin may also inhibit babs. Need a large study on this.

Curcumin (a herb)--he is now using it to treat babs. Published studies show it is useful for malaria.

Cryptolepis has been used in Africa for malaria. There is a published study in Ghana. It had a 93% cure rate (a 50% cure rate in 3 days; 90% cure rate in 7 days) You can get it at: www.woodlandessence.com

If adrenal function is low (patient has a low cortisol), they will not respond to antibiotics.

He told of a patient with intractable babs. They were treated for babs for 5 years and were not cured. Then, he gave them 1 teaspoon of cryptolepis 3 times per day with Byron White herbs. This is making the patient feel well. He hasn’t found any side effects with the cryptolepis. It may not be curative. It lowers the parasite load and strengthens the patient’s immune system.

Brucellosis also causes night sweats, so check for this in a patient with night sweats.

Use malarone for the patient who can’t clear babs. Low dose to maintain them.

We need new treatment options for babs.

Thank you TF. I've read this before and have also watched the video from that conference. I could not tell which is his first choice though.

If I decide to treat for babesia I am leaning towards higher dosage of mepron, with zith, while doing crypto and an Art pulse. Then following up with a few rounds of coartem. Waiting to get my Igenex back, but then not sure if I should count on that as my deciding factor if it is neg.

I am interested in primaquine, but do not know anything about it. I've read that it is the only thing that can touch the liver stage. Is this true?

I see Dr. H. Not sure what his first choice would be for anyone else but for me it was high dose Mepron/Zyth//ART.

Followed by pulses of Coartem, Clindamycin, and long term low dose Malarone. I am still on Malarone along with A-Babs. No Babs symptoms at all but will stay on Malarone till forever...

I've had a definite reduction in babs symptoms by doing the chlorine dioxide Protocol 1000. For anyone wanting to try this, I recommend reading Kerri Rivera's book first to get the facts. There is a lot of hysteria on the internet about chlorine dioxide.

I am going to start primaquine next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

Coartem was really badly tolerated for me. Maybe it is because I had really high doses of it with Clynda and other herbs, etc.

Mlg, I appreciate that if you could keep us posted as to your progress. When I did Mepron, zith, art and the one round of coartem I never had any reaction, just felt normal. This was 10 years ago.

Hi,
Update, I did 5 days of Primaquine. I don't feel that it helped more than Clynda and Quinine. I felt better with the other babesia options (Mepron + Zithromax - Clinda+Quinine), like it was hitting the stuff that is in my sinuses and behind my eyes, etc. I also felt better with Anti-parasitics, such as Albenza, Ivermectin, Alinia, etc. with a Macroglide and heparin.

I feel light a coldness in my throat area and in my face. I have really bad head and sinus pressure and pain. It has got to be proto or something like it.

I am also on art and crypto.

First-timer babs meds.

Mepron and zith.

10 days in.

Also on roceph and tindi.

Not noticing ANYTHING good or bad with mepron and zith.

Frustrated.

How long till one should notice something?
