My son is not doing well physically right now. I got a script for amoxicilin, but don't want to use it.
This is what he has. Bloody tinged mucous, raw nose, wet cough, sore throat, first time yesterday 100 temp, and calves hurt.
We used a netti pot yesterday despite the comment not to use if plugged, but I didn't know how to unplug except to start the saline and then sneeze and blow. Get some opening and keep going. Last night we could not free the left nostril so we stopped. When we could free them, a thick yellow came out.
I think the chronic nasal drip coupled with the high pollen has taken this over the edge. I want to get things moving to free up infection issues.
I have been working so hard on his gut, that the last thing I want to do is slamb it with 10 days of Amoxicilin, especially is his temp has gone down to normal, or been under 100.
What should I do?
Also, he has green stools with tummy pain. I'm assuming this is from all the drainage.
Always something.
Thanks

Poor guy. I have gotten some pinkish mucous in the past when using the neti pot with sea salt solution my ENT advised me to use. I would not be too alarmed by this.
But yellow and thick mucous might mean he has a sinus infection - especially when one of his sinuses is totally blocked. Also green stools and tummy pain do not sound good. I would let his doc know about both.

Oh no 2Roads!
Is his fever down today?
I use my neti bottle when I have a cold also. I find if I just gently put the saline in my nose, but don't squeeze, the saline helps to break apart the congestion.
Then once I get the yellow/green stuff out I do this recipe my LL gave me.
2 teaspoons of xylitol crystals (have to be from birch NOT corn) dissolved in 1 cup of lukewarm filtered water.
I shake the daylights out till the crystals dissolve and then flush with that.
The xylitol breaks up any yeast or fungus in my nasal cavity.
The xylitol flush sometimes I'll do that six times a day. My doc says it only works as a fungicide when it is in contact.
I totally understand why you are hesitent to use the amox.
Guts are sensitive things.
I can't advise for kids, but for me, I don't ever take any abx for sinus infections. I just do the xylitol neti recipe.
Works like a top.
After the first flush, 10 minutes or so after the green stuff will start to drain. Sometimes big gobs down my throat-i have to spit them out.
Anyways, if you do choose to do the amox, please be sure he has probiotics and also fibre to help the probiotics stick.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Praying for your son to get well soon.

PS. The xylitol recipe also helps my allergies. Better so than the plain saline flush.

Thanks dbpei and Greta.
I did tell the doc about the green and the tummy. They want to see if that feels better too on the amoxicilin. The tummy randomly hurts, and the stools aren't green all the time. Not sure how it fits in except to say that right now, it's in, coupled with what else we have.
I was concerned about the rogue calf pain that hurt a little on the one leg two days ago, and then yesterday was in both legs bad enough to cause limping. It's gone now, but what up?
I looked up the xylitol Greta. That;s interesting. Where do you get yours from? Thanks. Does your ENT say this is good too?
I forgot to say he's had two strep tests in the last 2 weeks, all negative.
The first doc he saw didn't want to give him the amox. The one he saw yesterday, did so due to low grade fever. I didn't his temp this morning, but he was off and running to school.
They are starting the "family unit" at school, and he has missed two days of it. His friend said that the first day they got to all shout out "penis" and "vagina" with the visiting doctor until the giddies were gone.....I guess. Needless to say, he had to get there today......ok..........

Haha! 2roads! That's cute!
They sure didn't do anything funny like that when I had sex ed.
Lots of anatomy drawings on the overhead projector and a very monotonous instructor.
I was asigned seating next to a boy I had a crush on. That entire term.
Those lessons were so embarassing. Everyone was trying to act cool. I was already a nervous sweatbucket from sitting next to my crush! Haha.
I didn't realize he's been sick for 2 weeks. That's awful-the poor guy.
Are you going to give him the amox?
No, my ENT suggested steroid nasal spray and allergy avoidance.
But my LLND suggested the xyltol flush and it works so good for me.

How about some high dose ester c powder in some juice that he likes until it creates a flush and releases stool.
Calf pain can be related to the colon. Vit C is an antihistamine. I always go with the premise that disease starts in the colon. A warm water enema may also help. Hope your guy feels better.

Oh Greta...that would have been alkward....next to your crush.
What grade were you in?
IDK what to do.
I don't want him suffering though. he doesn't have normal sleep cycles at night anyway, and now he can't breathe well.
Up for more thoughts.
I do agree that if I give it, he needs to choke down a bunch of Kefir....or something.

Thanks Gael.
Is the ester c, like the mega Vit C orange flavored packet type thing? I have some of that at home. Would that be safe for him to take? Didn't know it was an antihistamine.
I can't see us doing the enema.
The nasal wash was traumatic enough.

Not sure..what else is in the packet and how much vit c?

Oh dear. That sounds awful.
Another thing that helps is adding herbs to a pot with water and bringing them to a boil (use thyme, add mint if you like). Use a lot of thyme, don't be shy.
Thyme has antibacterial qualities.
Remove the pot from the stove.
Place a towel over your son's head and have him breath in the steam. This helped clear my nose when nothing else would (even the neti pot). Both herbs are good for the lungs.
An ND recommended the steam. I really helps loosen all the crap up so it can come out.
