I was listening to Dr David Perlmutter's amazing talk on the Autoimmune Summit today. (His talk is available for free until Mon 11/17 at 10 am eastern time...here is the link:

http://autoimmunesummit.com/david-perlmutter/

He shared about a 13 year old male patient he had from Canada with a serious tic/movement disorder.

Dr P took a good history and noted that this boy had lots of infections and antibiotics at a young age.

His mother was already giving him probiotics, but Dr P wondered just how much of the probiotics were actually making it past the stomach and into the bowel?

It was possible that very little was making it into the bowel.

At the end of their appt, Dr P told the mother to go to the pharmacy that day (they were scheduled to return to Canada the following day) and get an enema.

He instructed her to add 6 caps of probiotics to the enema and administer it.

Fortunately, the 13 yr old was open to this since he was not finding help elsewhere, and was grateful that Dr P was thinking outside the box.

Dr P said conventional medicine's answer to a tic disorder would be to prescribe Haldol or another antipsychotic drug.

The next morning, the mother called Dr P at his office and told him that after administering the probiotic enema the night before, her son's tic disorder had stopped!

The 13 yr old continues to administer daily probiotic enemas to himself with up to 12 caps of broad spectrum probiotics per enema.

That is quite an amazing testament to the power of our immune system in our gut!

Dr P said that when recovering from any disease/illness,especially inflammatory conditions and autoimmune conditions, we should focus on restoration of gut bacteria.

Dr P also told about an MS patient who had a gait disorder and also had one pupil that was larger than the other.

This person had a history of Lyme disease and had taken lots of antibiotics.

The patient had 6 fecal transplants.

After the fecal transplants, the patient's gait and pupil became normal!

Dr P said the gut wall lining is only one cell thick and mediates what gets in and out (intestinal permeability or leaky gut).

Hope you don't mind. I copied your post to the ACN PANS/PANDAS/Lyme forum.

Any particular strains? Or just a high potency multi-strain?

Some very good detail in that. I can't help but be saddened, though, that he seems to have blinders on regarding autism and Alzheimer's. He is so sure of his theory and that leaves zero room for lyme being the cause for some cases of each. He's very closed minded in some surprising ways.

BoxerMom,

Dr P did not mention particular strains.

He said a broad spectrum one, so yes, a high potency multi-strain probiotic is what he was referring to, I believe.

Keebler,

I have not read his book or anything, so I am not fully aware of his position on infections.

He did say that autism patients often have an overgrowth of clostridium speciesin the gut.

He said that there is a study that a Dr Feingold (?spelling) did, which gave vancomycin (like would be given to C Diff patients) to autism patients and they had instant improvement.

I just clicked on the link in my first post in this thread, and the interview with Dr Perlmutter is still able to be viewed if anyone wants to watch it before the link no longer works.

In the video, he said that one particular gut issue was ALWAYS the cause of both autism and Alzheimer's. He repeated himself. Left no room whatsoever for any other cause. "Always" was emphasized.

Well, the gut may always be involved [and it should ALWAYS be involved in treatment] but it is certainly in error to think or say that the gut [as in the range of his discussion] is always the cause of either autism or alzheimer's.

I backed up and listened to that phrase again to be sure I heard correctly. I had watched so late last night, though, and did not note exactly where or type out the phrase segment.

Gut health can effected by metals/vaccine adjuvants, pesticides and GMOs in food which act like antibiotics in the gut, antibiotics in CAFO raised meats, antibiotic treatment, lack of good bacteria passed to the child during C-section as opposed to vaginal birth, lack of good bacteria passed through breast milk if bottle fed.

The amount and species passed along during vaginal birth and breast feeding will of course depend on the mother's gut flora and whether or not she is highly vaccinated, and the types of food (organic or not) she eats and how many antibiotic treatments she has had. Hers will depend on her mother's.

So what comes first? The compromised gut and thus compromised immune system and then lyme/co and autoimmune disease; or lyme/co, compromised immune system, compromised gut then autoimmune disease?

We are all eating/have eaten pesticides, GMO, have all had abx either from the doctor or through our CFAO food. Our guts are all lacking the good commensal bacteria our ancestors used to have.

Gut function has to be addressed when the immune system is impacted.

rowingmom,

You say "Gut function has to be addressed when the immune system is impacted." (end quote)

Absolutely.

Still, it is not ALWAYS the CAUSE of either autism or alzheimers, as he so emphatically stated & repeated. That's just the point I was trying to make.

Yes, a distressed gut can set the stage for the body to not be able to withstand other hits and cause some major reactions in the brain / nervous system but, still, gut matters are not ALWAYS the cause of either autism or alzheimers.

Lyme / TBD - often a direct cause of both autism & Alzheimer's for many. Lyme also can destroy the gut so that often comes as the infection takes hold.

For those with lyme / TBD / chronic stealth infections as the major cause, addressing gut issues is vital but can still create failure if the infections are not fully & assertively addressed for as long as required (as safely as possible for all body systems, of course).
