My husband picked up my Malarone from the pharmacy today. It does not say how to take it and I am not real sure if there is a standard protocol for treating babesia.

The paperwork that came with it says take 1 a day but the label says the box contains 8 days worth which would be 3 a day. I will be calling the doctor's office in the morning but am not sure I will get anyone. The day before Thanksgiving and they are calling for 3"-5" of snow.

OH, I can call the pharmacy tomorrow to verify the dosage if the doctors office is closed.

Take it with lots of fat.

I ramped up slowly on malarone til I got up to a very high dose.

The instructions on the pre-printed box are probably for malaria too.

Yes, call the pharmacy to see what the doctor put on the paperwork if you can't reach his office.

I called the doctors office this morning and they were closed do to bad weather.

Evidently the doctor's note was to take as directed. Not overly helpful at the moment. The pharmacist said to take one a day until I can talk to the doctor.

Dr B's protocol says to take ***mg Atovaquone (Mepron or Malarone) Is his recommendation to take the same mg amount of either Mepron or Malarone?

I don't suppose that either Malarone or Azithromycin will help fight the sinus infection I seem to be coming down with.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Ugh, I hate that "as directed" crap. My doctor was suppose to write down the dosage on my treatment papers (I asked at my appointment and was told it would be in there). when I looked my papers all it said was "as directed." That's not helpful at all!

I agree with the pharmacist, start with one. That's a really good starting place.

I also wouldn't start zith and malarone at the same time. Wait a few days between so you can gauge reaction.

I did GREAT with malarone (no herx, lots of energy). I was allergic to zith. A lot of people have the opposite reaction I had.

You might want to wait til Saturday or Sunday to start, so the doctor will be available on Monday if there's a questionable reaction.

Both might help with the sinus infection. Zith is given for sinus stuff and there's been some recent studies that malarone/mepron cover a variety of infections.

Malarone will not help for a sinus infection. It is a malaria drug. Zithromax is an antibiotic and will help with a sinus infection.

If you're starting both, I would recommend starting one at a time. I take both, but I do not take them at the same time. Up to your dr on how to treat you though.

My take on it (and my dr) is that you don't want to kill everything off too quickly and too strongly as to have major herxes. Slow and steady wins the race...

I only take one Malarone a day when I'm on that rotation. But again, up to what your dr. wants you to take.

Here is some guidance on how to take Mepron. It is from a well-known lyme doctor's book:
