Any insight would be helpful on my test results. I'm on my third doctor, my last one telling me I didn't have lyme. (Negative ELISA test.) Went to an LLMD. Still waiting on lots more test results, but I got my Igenex back and am looking for any help on interpretation?

My positive marked items:
IGM:
**31 kDa. ++
**34 kDa. +
**39 kDa. IND
**41 kDa. +
58 kDa. ++

IGG:
**23-25 kDa +
**31 kDa ++++
**34 kDa +
** 39 kDa IND
**41 +

All others are negative.

Is this a positive, negative, or undecided test result?
What to the *** and ++ mean?

Any of your thoughts or opinions are appreciated. I understand my LLMD will go over things with me at my next appointment and address my results with my other tests, but I'd like to go in informed and ready with further questions.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT!

Welcome, magswag. Sorry, of course for why you are here and what I'm about to say: yes, it sure looks very positive to me with

#31 even just for starters, as that's a specific marker. More detail below.

Keep in mind that the CDC criteria for an official positive test is very different from what the reality is, though. The CDC criteria is ridiculous and uninformed and dismisses essential considerations. There are a lot of tests that are considered negative but are false negative.

you don't say if this me CDC criteria or not but the detail below will help shine some light. Physical symptoms, history, etc. also key, of course.

Your posting history, though shows that you actually did test positive last December and received just two weeks of one Rx. Sorry, so very sorry, but that was severe under treatment. Lyme was not addressed adequately but that is what most IDSA ID doctors do, and it's just such a bad outcome for so many.

You asked if anyone else ever had such experiences? Thousands have. That's why LymeNet is here. That's why ILADS exists, too, to try to correct such wrongs.

It sounds like you have found a real doctor, now, just be sure they are a true lyme literate doctor, ILADS "educated"

Lyme Western Blot discussion.

from that thread, a list from Lyme Times:

9 cross reactive for borrelia
12 specific for Bb
18 unknown

20 cross reactive for borrelia
21 unknown
22 specific for Bb probably the 23/25 band

23/25 OspC specific for Bb
28 unknown
30 unknown, probably Osp common in Europe

31 OspA specific for Bb
34 OspB specific for Bb

25 specific for Bb
37 specific for Bb

38 cross reactive for Bb

39 major protein of Bb flagellin Bb specific

41 flagellin protein of all spirochetes; one of the first to appear, Bb specific

45 cross reactive for all borrelia
50 cross reactive for all borrelia
55 cross reactive for all borrelia
57 cross reactive for all borrelia

58 unknown but may be heat shock Bb protein

60 cross reactive for all borrelia
66 cross reactive for all borrelia

83 specific antigen for the lyme bacterium, probably a cytoplasmic membrane

93 unknown, probably the same protein as 83, just measure incorrectly

Testing for Borreliosis

Excerpts:

. . . The numbers on a Western blot such as 23, 31, 34 or 39 refer to how much that particular part of the bacteria weighs in kilodaltons.

The significant antibodies, in my opinion, are the 18, 23-25, 28, 30, 31, 34, 39, 59, 66 and 83-93. . . .

[Explains that there are various strains of borellia, so testing often misses the mark. Even if you have not traveled to various states, birds that fly - and can carry ticks and drop them off - have and they often land in NYC, too.]

. . . The same is true for co-infections. The babesia in Missouri is called MO-1. It is a different babesia. There are different ehrlichia. It would appear there is a different bartonella. When you have different strains of germs, the test results may be falsely negative. . . .

[lots more detail here]

Looks pretty danged positive to me. The pluses + show how strong the bands are .. how strong the reaction to that protein was.

So .. wow!

At the top of your test, it should say if this is clearly positive or not. At any rate, nothing but Lyme could make all those bands show up.

Western Blot Explanation
http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/1/42077

From the above link:

"Band 39: Unknown what this antigen is, but based on research at the National Institute of Health (NIH), other Borrelia (such as Borrelia recurrentis that causes relapsing fever), do not even have the genetics to code for the 39 kDa antigen, much less produce it. It is the most specific antibody for borreliosis of all."

The good news is that since your test lights up like a Christmas tree - it confirms that test from last December and helps you know where to begin.

There is hope once you can start to see a path in the road and explanation for the potholes along the way.

Hi, I don't mean to hijack someone else's post, but I have questions about the Western Blot test and I can't figure out how to post a new question.

Is it possible to have a false positive? Can someone tell me is my test indeed positive? My Dr said it is, but I don't have nearly as many positive numbers as what I see some people do. My numbers are as follows:

Lyme Ab IgG - 58 & 41 abnormal
Lyme Ab IgM - 41 & 23 abnormal

I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease earlier this year and have dealt with different health issues over that past 5-7 years. Just seeking answers and thankful to have found a group who understands Lyme! Thank you in advance for your answers.
