Hi all
I've been reading about "how to handle the herx" and I've been through this before unfortunately.

Does anyone have tips on the emotional aspects-anxiety, depression, etc.

Any input would be awesome!
Thank you

While this roller coaster ride certainly does involve a range emotions - and that's understandable - some of the same things used for a herxheimer all also "required" in order to address anxiety / depression.

Because . . . anxiety and depression very often are due to toxicity.

Six keys:

1. AVOID GLUTEN - gluten, alone, can cause depression terribly for many. See the "excitotoxin" thread a couple posts below. A gluten-free diet can ease depression. Sure did for me.

2. address toxicity issues - addressing with liver support

3. adrenal support - as adrenal dysfunction can cause anxiety / depression, too.

4. nutrient requirements - magnesium is often deficient in those with lyme. A place to begin. Key fatty acids, too.

5. you might seek out a LL counselor. Talk about your feelings. IMO, a counselor who is not LL is not likely going to be able to help much in understanding anything about lyme, though - and many actually hurt my emotional well-being because they had no clue about lyme. Ask at your local lyme support group.

6. And you might also find some kind of arts or music group to express yourself / loose yourself. Appreciate beauty where you can, connect with movement and music where you can.

Qigong or Tai Chi are movement healing arts. Also good to help "move" stagnant energy and lift the mood.

Excitotoxins; MSG; Aspartame; & "Natural" Flavors (that are not likely natural at all).

Gluten / Wheat links here, too.

Check all supplements and assess diet (and anything that comes into our bodies for:

Topic: Amino Acid Information Link

See post: Caution: Aspartate; Glutamine; and Phenylalanine (3 excitatory amino acids that can be wrong for us when added as supplements, beyond a normal dietary level)

Seaweed has its own natural MSG and can be very excitatory

Hope you feel better and can grab onto some good vibe waves.

Be kind to yourself and understanding in all your thoughts. Hold your hand over your heart - and maybe the other hand over your belly - and just feel compassion, breathe and just appreciate yourself.

* Diaphragmatic breathing, too. Find a good YouTube video. This can turn around a sharp dive.

Also to consider: drink water. Don't flood yourself but do drink enough. Green Tea, too, might be very helpful. But not from tea bags. Most tea bags contain "natural" flavors that can clobber us. And most are inferior teas, too. LOOSE tea is best where possible.

if you are not on an antidepressant,5htp and l-theanine can be very helpful. They have been a lifesaver for me at times.

Stay regular to keep toxins moving out,no artificial sweeteners except stevia, drink water, take magnesium if need to stay regular.

Try and get sleep, again 5htp and l-theanine can help there along with melatonin.

I would stay away from pharmaceutical drugs...

Meditation helps. You can get audio CDs from the Monroe Institute or Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, etc. on-line that help with meditation. Some of the audio is on YouTube for free. Use some headphones...

An herb called kratom helps alot but it's not for everyone. You may want to look into it.

Sorry to hear you are dealing with this; such a horrible symptom! Remind yourself that its the bugs talking which it is.

Detox, detox, detox.

If its not letting up you could try Sam-E, St. Johns Wort, or Rescue Remedy for anxiety. The website Native Remedies has some mood and calming formulas which are helpful too.

Agreed that meditation is so helpful.

I take NOW NAC which does all sorts of beneficial things for someone with Lyme and, as a wonderful extra, creates a peaceful mood. In fact, if you read customer feedback on it, NAC is used by most people for anxiety.

Depending on the level of depression, anxiety, etc., it might be beneficial to see a psychiatrist. Some people need pharmaceuticals to get through this. There is no shame in getting the help you need.

If your emotional herxes are extremely bad, please contact your LLMD immediately as it can be dangerous.

Best.

Detox, detox, detox! You know what I'm gonna say (lol), embrace coffee enemas! Nothing else works as well for me.

Good point on the detox, Catgirl. I use glutathione IV pushes and drink lemon water to detox.
