there is a new fungal superbug called candida auris. deadly and resistant to diflucan, nystatin and other antifungal drugs.

there have been 7 cases and four have died. apparently drs misdiagnose it as regular candida and it doesnt get treated adequately.

of course people with autoimmune disorders, respiratory and other breathing issues are at high risk.

one more to add to the list.

There's not much cause for alarm at this point since there have only been 13 cases in the U.S. over the past few years.

The concern pertains to severely-immune-compromised patients (which describes us)-- in hospitals.

Two of the instances involved two different hospitals (a hospital in Illinois and one in New Jersey) where it seems to have been spread between patients (involving 4 patients). The strains between the two patients in the respective hospitals were nearly identical.

Of course this infection is relevant to us because most of us are immune-compromised, if not severely immune-compromised. Secondly, there is a greater risk to those with intravenous lines or those with catheters. Thirdly, hospitals seem to be the place of highest risk, and that is the setting we sometimes find ourselves in unfortunately.
