I am experimenting with a very low carb diet. I eat mostly meat and drink water.

I know that there will be negative comments. I'm only doing this temporarily for medicinal purposes. I have done every WOE (way of eating) out there. I think this is rebuilding my cells.

Animal fat is similar to the membrane of our cells, it makes sense that it would heal the cells.

Is anyone following this type of diet?

Out of default since I have nothing left to eat.

I do manage to eat Romaine lettuce in small amounts and a bit of cheese now and then.

I cheat and have dairy when I get really hungry.

I've been mostly zero-carb for about 2 years now. On rare occasions I will eat some sweet potato chips or similar. If I eat carbs my Candida goes nuts.

Depends on whether you define milk carbs as carbs. I don't and I can go weeks on a milk only diet and it really helps my symptoms.

Hey Haley- I went to a practitioner and still see her- she's amazing that believes very much red meat in particular helps to rebuild the body. I've been on this type of diet ever since - carbs are not good for my candida either. I follow basically a AIP diet and it really helps me. Keep us posted!

Funny you should post this. I just started Paleo, which I know isn't zero carb but is at least cutting out large categories of then. I seem to be feeling better.

My husband has had amazing results with the ketogenic diet for a different medical condition, which is what spurred me to try Paleo. I think there is a lot to diet.

What does AIP mean?

So some of you only eat protein? No veggies or fruit?

I was probably 85% Paleo for 2 years before I got ill and still am ill. Would be interested to know if anyone else was low carb, gluten, dairy and sugar free before getting Lyme and what changes you might have made diet wise that helped.

Thanks

I can't eat fruit because of my Candida but I eat tons of veggies. My diet is basically meat, nuts, seeds, and veggies.

Before Lyme, I loved Oreos... With milk (: No more gluten, dairy, sugar, or carbs for me though.

AIP .. Autoimmune Protocol, I believe.

Grains are very bad for me. I just get into so much pain if I eat them. Same with potatoes and other nightshades .. anything with oxalates.

To me, zero carbs means no vegetables, not just the starchy ones. It might be helpful for newbies if people eating low or 'zero' carbs were clear about whether or not they are eating veg.

I guess veggies do have a small amount of carbs... I never really thought about that. So I guess you'd call my diet a very low carb diet.

I am curious, could you explain, what is it about milk carbs that you see as different from other carbs?

Is anyone using prebiotics to feed the good gut bacteria? If so what are you using?

I have had a couple stool tests and I have no good bacteria (lots of bad stuff) at all despite consuming a lot of probiotics.

Thanks Tutu! Yes- Paleo Auto Immune Protocol(AIP). I eat veggie carbs but not real starchy because of candida primarily.

That is interesting and great about the ketogenic diet helping your husband.

I'd say you are correct ukarry- probably no veggies.

Due to allergies I cannot do eggs, dairy or gluten. I just plain feel better on the AIP diet.

Haley, How's it going on your diet? Are you feeling better I hope?

They cause no problemtic symptoms for me at all compared to grain and starch based carbs. Lactose is just glucose and galactose, probably the safest carbs around. I further buy Organic Valley Lactose Free milk which breaks it down into glucose and galactose already so its even easier to digest.

What I have often noticed on the internet as well as in real life is that people do not understand exactly what the term ""diet"" means. Everyone thinks this is giving up all food and stuff like that. In fact, this is not the case because the diet includes all possible products, but all that is important is to know how to combine these foods correctly and when is the right time to consume them.

I've always felt a need to eat red meat if I haven't for a few days. The LLMD I'm going to now told me I should eat red meat every day, because it's the best form of protein for healing.

Vegetables have a few carbs, but the energy it takes to chew and digest most of them cancels out the carbs--there are exceptions of course.

I learned a lot from Jonny Bowden's books. One of his oldest books (30 years old, give or take--wish I could remember the title!) has diets for different needs and questionaires to help find which diet for good for an individual to get healthy, and which diet suits each sort of metabolism.

What has worked for me for many years is gluten free, egg free, low carb, sufficient salt, and avoiding chemicals whenever possible. What isn't working for me during this sheltering at home time is the ice cream my husband insists on bringing home as comfort food. I have no resistance to ice cream!

both my partner and I are eating strict ketogenic Paleo style.

no grains at all
no starchy vegetables
only greens, celery, green beans etc in limited amounts
only whole foods prepared from scratch
all meat and eggs are pasture-raised organic - not feedlot/factory ( it makes a difference)

we changed to this after 3 years of being ill and unable to find anything that worked.

my partner was running 5 days after changing to this way of eating - when before this even walking 1 mile was like dragging sandbags uphill.

once i saw that i had to try it for myself.

my partner has since recovered 80-90% and returned to full time work!

I have improved more slowly - but am about 50% recovered so far
diet is the single biggest thing that has helped us both the most ( more than antibiotics and herbs ) - and we have tried a lot of things

We both had a lot of gut symptoms before and suspect Lyme and Bartonella are involved.
Our guts are inflamed and just cannot tolerate lots of stuff.

fiber is important for long term gut health - as without that our bacteria get depleted and more immune disruption is likely - and that is a challenge.

we try to eat plenty of olives, herbs, salad, mushrooms to try to keep varied fiber going in.

extra salt is also important on Keto as your kidneys are working hard and you urinate more and excrete salt in the process - so you will get cramps if you don't get enough salt.
2-3 generous pinch of sea salt on each meal seems to work for us

feel so much better eating like this - I grew up into sports, sports nutrition, and bodybuilding - and the received wisdom there was all about loading with complex carbs ( which were really processed carbs ) this thinking was really ingrained and I really didn't want to change.

But it turns out humans do not need carbs to survive - only the big processed food multinationals do - so they flood our TV screens and supermarkets with their products.

but at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist - that stuff is not made to be good for you (no matter what it says on the label) it has only one purpose - it's just designed to be good for their bottom line !!!!
