I have a friend who just pulled a tick off of her (not engorged) after she estimates 4-9hours on Sunday.

She asked if she should have the tick tested, but with Bay Area Lyme still appearing to be down for new ticks, I'm not sure if she should spend the $$ to get it tested at IGENEX or the Tick Report.

How good is tick testing? Given what I've been through, I think she should get every test done she can just in case, but I don't want to freak her out.

Thanks for your thoughts!

You have to pay for each disease .. if you want to test for Lyme, it's (at last report) $75, another illness .. $75

So it adds up quickly. Takes 3 weeks for results.

I did it years ago and began taking doxy right away. I began having bad symptoms 9 days in. The test came back 3 weeks later and said the tick was free of Lyme.

I didn't believe it!

I actually suggested she could save her money and go to an LLMD to get on real prophylaxis, and since she keeps getting bitten, to develop a relationship with a good doc.

Her doctor offered her a single dose of 200mg of doxy.

Hi paleogal

Hey, if tick testing is free, why not ?

Try this;

Yeah, we couldn't find free tick testing that also sent results to the patient/bitten person. I will pass along these links to her now.

Thanks, Bartenderbonnie!

This lab only tests for 4 strains.

Lyme
Relapsing fever
Babesiosis
Anaplasmosis

Last summer I got bit twice. Both times I sent tick for testing. Both times results were negative. Both times I got extremely ill.

Regardless of results, I would treat.

I second that emotion! You said...

"I actually suggested she could save her money and go to an LLMD to get on real prophylaxis, and since she keeps getting bitten, to develop a relationship with a good doc."

That's what I'd recommend!

And/or, have her print out the treatment document (adult) found below at the Treat The Bite link.

Have her take it to a doctor locally and hand them the copy. It is only one page, but it has Dr. B's recommendations on it.

With that in hand, it would be harder for them to say no.

Good luck and thanks for trying to help your friend!

[Eek!] She needs to get on abx WAY before any tick testing results come in.
