Marie,
This happened to our daughter about 20 years ago when she began treating her Lyme disease with a new-to-her antibiotic, but I don't recall which antibiotic now because it's been too long ago. The swelling along her lower spine was pronounced, involving 4-5 vertebrae, and she was quite miserable, as one might imagine.

Luckily, I recognized it as "radiculitis" which is more typical of one of the European strains of borreliosis because I had read about it in European medical journal articles. Therefore, I suggest a simple Google search for "radiculitis + Lyme":

I don't recall which antibiotic she was taking (maybe Levaquin which is out-of-favor now), but the pain and swelling eventually subsided gradually as the antibiotic worked its magic.

I waited several days to reply, hoping that someone else would offer a better answer, but this clue should help you get started in looking for more information.

Also, I decided to click on your user profile in order to look for some of your recent topics, which have given me a strong clue that your recent swollen vertebrae is probably a sign of Herxing after starting a very strong, new-to-you antibiotic, as it was in our daughter's case, too.

This is just an educated guess on my part, so do make a note to report this strange new symptom to your doctor. My hunch is that s/he will reassure you and can help you decide whether taking an NSAID, such as Aleve, to help you get sleep at night might be advisable if the pain becomes too unbearable.

PS -- I'm editing now to add that I think that one of your other recent topics explains what's going on with you instead. -- namely, toxins from your recent dental work -- either mercury toxin, or more likely toxins from an infected tooth.

Therefore, ignore everything that I've written above about Herxing from a new antibiotic, and look for a new biological dentist in your area instead:

(I'm hesitant to delete anything that I've already written because others might have seen it by now, and deleting it could be confusing for those readers. That's because composing this message has taken me nearly an hour or longer to complete, due to numerous edits in the process.)

TX Lyme Mom,

I replied to another post of your and thanked you for leaving certain detail even after you considered editing out some of it.

THIS is the post to which I was referring but I got mixed up. Thanks for leaving all you wrote. I intend to look back over it, a time or three, so that I might just have it in my brain if ever needed.

And, really, often in details of one condition we find similarities or differences that spark our mind in the direction of an answer to -- oh, something else.

The time change already has me rather out of sorts. Should be an interesting week. Time changes really throw my clock off kilter.

marie,

Vertebrae swollen and tender can be from lyme, or other infection . . . also the toxic load, overall.

Magnesium might help relieve both inflammation and pain. however, on Monday morning, I hope you can locate a doctor, either a LLMD or someone through the Road Back Foundation.

Be very guarded of your spine and neck right now. Tender, Tender loving care.

Going through this now on malarone. My spine burns about a half hour after taking it so it must be working. Hurts like hell though but I will push through.
