Hey everyone, I just began my bicillin injections a week ago. Of course probiotics are a must! I was on oral abx over the summer and while taking the probiotics I was told the safe rule is 2-3 hours to space them out ( obviously so they don't interfere with eachother).

This may sound stupid/silly but what about the injections? I do the injections 2x a week, Mondays and Thursdays.

I just wanted some clarification, last week at my appt I forgot to ask the nurse this. Thanks everyone!

as far as I have read - most practitioners do not suggest probiotics are needed with injected antibiotics as they are not going directly into the gut.

in any case there have been some very high quality studies recently using the gold standard in microbiome studies of aspirating fluid from various locations in the gut and taking gut lining biopsies - to see what bacteria are relly there( rather than looking at what comes out in the poop as this can be very different)

the results were suprising and counter to all teh advice the functonal medicine world has been giving about always taking probiotics with antibiotics.

for instance those patients taking probiotics with antibiotics took several months LONGER to restore thier gut microbiome to comparable state to before they took teh antibiotics - than those that took antibiotics and no probiotics.

i think we need the dust to settle and a few more studies with larger numbers, perhaps different antibiotic types etc before we can better understand what's really going on.

i mention it here only to highlight that there may only be a limited benefit - even if you were taking oral abx.

the benefits claimed for taking the probiotics when on oral antibiotics are normally
- promoting more normal "microbiome" while on abx - which the studies i mention seem to counter
-promoting a faster return to a "normal microbiome" after abx completed - which again the studies i mention seem to counter ( in fact they suggest the reverse seems to be true)
-providing some degree of protection from opportunistic infection with resistant gut pathogens - eg clostridia difficile. which may well hold up - although this is normally a hopsital aquired infection - so if you are not in a hospital setting it may be of limited benefit.

heresey i know! -

will try to find links to the studies I had in mind and post them

Thanks! Just trying to stay proactive with everything. As noted above, I started the Nystatin again and yogurt. Hope you and everyone else is staying healthy, (and sane!) with this Corona Virus.
