Hi, I am an independent researcher and psychologist who is currently working on a book about Lyme disease. I am looking for people who would consider being interviewed. Below is further information:
Publications:

Do you suffer from Lyme disease currently? or Are you in remission?

If either of the above apply to you, participate in my creation of a very important piece of work that will focus on greater understanding and care for those of us who have known the ravages of this disease. Please contact me today to share your experiences.

Include your name, phone number and email address for contact information only. ([email protected])

I thank you again for your interest.

All the interviews will be conducted by me and are totally confidential.

Examples of questions may be:

1. Prior to the diagnosis of Lyme disease were you told that you were just depressed and needed psychiatric care?
2. Did any of your physicians ever discuss psychotherapy services with you? If so, what was your feeling about it?
3. In the course of your illness have you ever seen a mental health professional? What kind of care did you receive?
4. If you saw a therapist was he/she knowledgeable of your condition?
5. Have you had suicidal thoughts or any attempts?
6. Have you lost friends/ family members?
7. What is you relationship like with your family?
8. How long did it take to receive a diagnosis of lyme disease and how many doctors do you think you saw before receiving it?

Sounds like a good thing to do. I am wondering if at some point you might want to talk to lyme literate psychiatrists. Maybe they could steer you toward some patients, if you don't get as many replies as you want here. Can get there names at www.ilads.com

We have had quite a few people who have had the kind of problems you mention. Not sure how many will reply, might be a bit hesitant, unsure of your orientation. However, it does sound legit to me.

Dr Lipson,
Thank you for your interest. I agree with lou that many here will be hesitant to reply, due to recent ridicule over being "mentally ill" not "physically ill" from Lyme. In other words, some are telling posters here that Lyme is all in their heads.
I hope your research is legitimate and that it helps Lyme patients everywhere.

Is there any way you can reassure those who would be hesitant to reply to your request?

Thank you!

Do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor, but I DID stay at a Holiday Inn Express!

I truly understand your concern and am so sorry that there are so many people with little compassion for people's suffering. Please check out my website at www.docmindybeth.com. I am not only a psychologist, but a lyme sufferer and am trying to get important information out that will help our cause not hurt it. I hope that people will take the time to really consider contributing as it would mean a lot to our community. Again, thanks for your time!

docmindybeth,

For research purposes, consider the site of
Robert Bransfield,M.D., psychiatrist with expertise in lyme.
If I were you, I'd read everything he ever wrote.

Please check out the website www.docmindybeth.com.

That will give you a better picture of the author and her work. Then you can decide if you are interested.

You can send recommendations to her there.

BTW, Mindy-Beth not to belittle what you are doing, but you may want to change the words "looking for research subjects" to something like, seeking "participants for research"

Good points, Pippy!

Doc Mindy Beth- Perhaps you can tell us a little more about your process? Will appropriate confidentiality forms be provided/signed?

Just to be on the safe side, I checked with the NY Board of Regents and was glad to see that they do have you listed. According to them you are working under a permit/in training. Can you please tell us if this is correct and a little about what this means and who your supervisor is?

Thanks!
Cheryl

Durring my phone conversation with this doctor she assured me that in the papers and forms she is sending me are confidentiality forms.......

I had a short and pleasant discussion with this lady.

If you can help I would suggest it.....

If not I'll be a lab rat and see what it's all about and report it here.....

The only thing we have to fear...is fear itself.....FDR

Was going to contact her for hubby (4 psych admits before diagnosis and treatment) but thought better not when I read she is studying past life regression.

That is just not something I could ever believe in and who knows what would end up in a book.

I talked with her personally, and she seems legit. And I know if the questioning gets to a point where I do not want to venture (info too personal, too much identifying info, etc) all I have to do is say so. She is initially sending out consent forms, and unless they are far too invasive, I will proceed ahead.

My conversation, along with my further research to look into her motives, seems to indicate she's OK.

One thing I did forget to ask is whether the "subjects" are identified in any way. She did tell me that all interviews would be taped, but then the tapes would be destroyed once they are transcribed.

I think things will go well.

Got to qualify my previous post. If she is also involved with studying past life regression.....this raises questions in my mind.

Recently I read a very good article on microbes and mental illness by a doc I had never heard of before. Sounded good. But when I went to his website, he also had articles on such things as abortion causing breast cancer (he thinks it does).

The problem is that docs like this get one thing right but are committed to other questionable positions, not sure this will do our cause any good. We are already considered the lymenuts, and mixing in other controversies will subtract, rather than add. Will push us further into the fringes.
