How do these new ratings work? If several people rate a certain member, is the rating an average one?

Is this to make sure new people can gauge people's credibility? Or what is the purpose?

I think rating people like this is potentially hurtful. In fact, I am already feeling hurt!

If it is useful in some way, I will try to get over it!

Lyddie, I just saw this too. Not sure how it is supposed to work. The whole board is just a little different now, and is taking some getting used to.

On this ratings issue, seems like there should be some info or some educating on how it is or should be used. You are right, I think there is potential for hurt feelings here.It would help if things were clearly spelled out.

Lyddie,

You are more observant than I am! Didn't even see the ratings til you pointed it out. I saw my member number and thought my number of posts had jumped from 400 something to 6000 something at first until I looked closer.

Maybe the rating has to do with the number of posts? Can't see anywhere to vote on ratings.

I think everyone except trolls and newbies should get 5 stars.

Trolls get 1 star, too bad nothing lower.

Newbies -?? no rating until they have posted a bit.

I can definately see the potential for hurt feelings.

I hope someone comes along and explains it to us.

Well, I can't figure out how to do squat!

I'm not complaining - cause I see lots of improvements - especially now that we can do things like bold our own text to really stress what is important !!!

And now, we don't have to remember any code for all the little [Confused] smileys!

There are lots of new options - I LIKE it.

I'm just so sad, though, that no one has RATE ME at all! I mean - no one has taken the time to even give me ONE STINKING STAR!

Words can not express how I'm feeling.
I think we need a little graemlin that is crying.

YES! We need the crying Graemlin! That will accurately reflect my emotion right now.

OK - well if any one figures out how to do the rating thing - WILL SOMEONE BE SO KIND AS TO GIVE ME AT LEAST 1 STINKING STAR? ?

Very distressed,

I figured out how to do the stars!
Yeah for me! Yeah for me!

You ALL must rate me at least a 3 for finding the info.

This is what you do -- under "Directory" - (next to the 'search' option) - you go & use the member's number and then on the right hand side of the directory -- you have options 1-5 on how to rate.

i'M #6777 - and I would EXPECT AT LEAST 3 stars for bringing you this IMPORTANT bit of info! Even if you don't like me - I have provided you with a great service this evening!

Thank you. Thank you very much for rating me AT LEAST 3 stars...or MORE! [Big Grin]

DR. WA,

I don't get it - I rated you with 5 stars - but I don't see it under your name yet. -

OK - after posting this message - you have 5 stars! Thanks for letting us know how to do the rating.

Although I still don't see the purpose for it - could be my lyme-brain...

Posted by DR. Wiseass (Member # 6777) on :

Oh, THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I'll go rate you now. Hey, if we bargain with each other - we can ALLLL get 5 stars!

hee hee hee - I'll be able to sleep now! [Big Grin]

OK - here's something else I discovered:

You can only vote ONCE for each person - so please make your decision carefully - and don't rate people low if you're in a bad mood cuz that ain't nice.

And ME, being the Queen of Nice, would NEVER vote any of you people low just cuz I'm mad at people at home -- and sure, if you people tick me off just a little....ME, being the Queen of Forgiveness - I wouldn't rate you low just for one instance of you ticking me off!

But I wonder if TOMORROW I come back, and if we have a big cyber cat fight if we can re-rate one another. Things that make you go....Hmmmm........

Oh, and the other thing: You can't rate yourself because, YES, I was gonna give myself AT LEAST 3 STARS....or more. [Wink]

Blessings to all of you, from a gal that currently has her first 5 STARS! YEE HAW!

Posted by DR. Wiseass (Member # 6777) on :

Ok -NOW it seems to be working the easy way - just by clicking on the link under the name....

BUT I rated you 5 stars ArtnSoul and it ain't showing up yet. I guess it takes awhile, huh?

Anyway - new fun here!

That's what we've needed, just a little more fun....and some new Graemlins that cuss, and cry, and puke - cuz those are fun too!

Posted by Lyddie (Member # 4349) on :

Hey Bea, you and I are the only ones with 4. Everyone else has 5. I feel like I'm in kindergarten!

Maybe someone will rescue our honor and vote enough to get us over 4.5...

Seriously, if Lymenet keeps this, I'm outta here. It will be hard to express an unpopular opinion, for one thing.

You can choose not to show the member rating by changing your profile.

Posted by cootiegirl (Member # 3216) on :

I may be wrong, but I have seen this at other boards and sometimes it is included in the program. So perhaps with the board update, it was a part of the programming package.

Personally I think it is a ridiculous element for any board - it reminds me of a high school popularity contest. I would think that with all the years of computer savvy that Lou, Tbrown and the others here have that are helping to create and moderate this board, that they will figure out how to eliminate this element.... Sick people, many with cognitive deficiencies, don't need to be 'rated' for their responses....

I couldn't agree more, and I'm glad you brought it up. There is an option to disable rating in the profile section.

I've definitely disabled it. Seems very out of place in a BB that people turn to when they're often desparate and in need of comfort and information.

I think it could really discourage people who need help from posting, when they themselves don't have or get ratings just because they're new or maybe a little rant-y.

Just my thoughts.

 -

What's my rating!????

Posted by DR. Wiseass (Member # 6777) on :

Oh, well I see y'alls' point about it - how some people's feelings could get hurt -- but what if it motivates other people not to be like a jerk on a regular basis?

Oh wait, that could be ME....hmmmm...((thinking, thinking....)) Oh yeah, while I'm thinking about it - I did go give you two - Lyddie & Bea - I gave you both 5's - so maybe it'll push you over onto the 5 category! As for Andie - I see you've omitted yours so I couldn't do anything.

I'm just wondering if they offered it because so many had left to that other site - and while making other improvements here - they added the ratings as a way for people to give their opinion of each other based on little stars -- you know so if your approval rating dropped from 5 to 2 -- you could figure that several people are CLEARLY upset with you! (Not that we Lymies have a hard time telling each other when we are! HA! That's like a given!)

I don't know if you can vote for someone ever again - so if that's the case - once you've given a 5 - you can't 'take it back' if the person that you thought was super cool - like ME -- you couldn't take back your rating me with the 5 stars when you found out I was just a big damn jerk! So if that's the case - I really don't see the point in it.

BUT someone else mentioned it, I think, above....about giving the newbiews a better understanding about who is credible around here....which in that case....if CREDIBILITY is the reason for it -- those people that generously gave me those 5 stars better see about taking a couple back - cuz we don't want to deceive anyone!

I wouldn't let it get your goat, girls!

I've had some people really publicly slam me in the past- and I just had to let it roll off. I know a lot of people don't like me here - just because of my name...or just because of the reputation I've given myself - just because I've sprinkled a bit of my posts with just the tiniest bit of profanity.

Just say, @@#$%# @@#$%$# a few times and y'all will feel better! Go ahead - try it. Hit your fist in the pillow while you're sayiig it. Get the frustration OUT OF YOUR BODY, and focus on healing.

Yes, "Healing Thru Profanity" by Dr. Wiseass...that's an excellent book title, isn't it? OK, it's MINE. MINE. MINE. MINE!

Well, it works for me,

Posted by DR. Wiseass (Member # 6777) on :

Now Heather Darlin' - I gave you 5 stars too.

You put that pretty sunflower picture up there and I counted 5 sunflowers and thought....hmmm...what should I give Heather?

And it was like the Sunflowers were speaking to me and do you know what they were saying....

....they we whispering "five-five-five"....

and I thought: OK. Done!

Hugs,

Well, I want to know what the member# is.....cause mine is 22~!?! I mean with a 22 and NO stars, its a bit confusing!

Is 22 an old member, a small #, not much, or what?

Heatherkiss, your flowers are beautiful~!

My posts on this are meant to be a little tongue- in-cheek, at least from a personal point of view. We all have bigger things to worry about.

However, I do hope that this feature of the new program is deleted. It is potentially destructive, I think.

Posted by dontlikeliver (Member # 4749) on :

Although it's great on Ebay to have the ratings system, I am not convinced it is a good idea on a support board, and here is why I think that:

People will be hurt if they have less stars than others.

What are we basing the ratings on/against?

Not everyone gets along and people may rate another member - who has been very nice and helpful, etc etc etc - badly, just out of spite.

It may be off-putting to newcomers who come for advice. They may think that (perfectly good) advice from someone with less than five stars is not as valid as advice from someone with a five star rating.

Just my thoughts.

Think it was based purely on number of posts at the beginning, then gets modified as people vote. I got five stars just from hanging around for years. That may be my only reward for chronic lyme! But I agree that it doesn't seem a useful thing for this type of board. Hopefully when trolls show up again, they can just be banned, not voted against.

Assuming this is just part of a package program deal. Don't know if it can be omitted. Anyone computer-savvy know if pieces of a program can be disabled?

Posted by Walnut (Member # 6585) on :

Before getting sick with Lyme, I wouldn't have cared about rating and popularity -- I would even have found it quite entertaining.

Nowadays I have big self esteem problems. If I were to get a low rating, I would probably be crushed for days. (To be proactive, I tried to rate myself, but it wouldn't let me).

I am sure that I am far from the only one with low self esteem. And I find the whole rating system highlly insensitive to people who are chronically ill with an illness that is known to cause low self esteem, depression and other mental issues.

Just go to 'update profile' thingy, scroll down to the 'allow ratings to be displayed' or something similar, I forget the wording. And click 'No'.

Then hit the update button at the bottom.

I also disabled the thing that shows I'm on line....somebody can see you're here and read their post and didn't respond, this could lead to bad feelings if you're just skimming thru in a hurry and don't have time to laboriously type an immediate response(for rotten typists like me)

Hey Meg, the # is chronoligical...when we joined.

We're a couple of old timers eh?? [Big Grin]

Walnut,

I tried to rate you and I got this message:

This particular member is not permitting ratings.

If you go in your profile you can chose yes or no to:

Allow your user rating to be publicly displayed?

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

Hi gang!

Meg....I think the #22 is because you registered in the year 2000, much earlier than most of us here. So the lower the number, the earlier you registered.

I thought the rating system was just so we could more easily spot newbies and/or trolls. Guess it won't work that way, since we can change rating systems so easily.

I agree that it can cause hurt feelings.

Someone tell me how you quote someone's text??

Posted by lymeloco (Member # 7192) on :

I'm not sure whose idea this was, but we come on here for support...not to be judged! I thought we are all one!

There are a lot of us on here that have enough to deal with physically, and psychiatric issues!
Not to mention are own personal problems!

Yes, we do have the option to not be rated, but I think it's degrading!

We are all having a tough time with all the devastaion going on right now. I'm also dealing with a son that's leaving in Oct. for Iraq!

This is sick, and I am going to borrow Tincup's Gone Fishing Sign till this is removed!

This is not a dog show! Does it depend on how high we hold our tails up?? Count me out!
As you can see, I'm very upset!

I have never been judgemental, and I'm not going to hurt people's feelings! We all our going through our own hell, and this adds fuel to the fire!

As far as newbies not being rated, that's even more cruel! Do you really thing a sick person needs to deal with all this? Especially new members!

Your driving people away!
Sorry, but that's my two cents worth!!

Posted by lou (Member # 81) on :

I don't think there was any intent at all, think this was just a feature of the program they got.

Posted by Lyddie (Member # 4349) on :

The thing is, there are people here on Lymenet who ARE using these ratings. I looked up mine and 4 people have voted on my rating. Why did they do this? Whether favorable or unfavorable votes, I am kind of curious what the motivation was.

I agree that a lot of us are isolated or facing challenges that make this rating difficult. I liked the comment about the dog show!

Now, we can choose to disable it, but I am left with a creepy feeling of violation from the fact that people have already done ratings. It really does feel kind of creepy.

It seems that Lou is saying there is a tech. problem with removing this feature, but I hope it can be removed, so noone else feels violated.

Dumb question, where is the update profile thing? Charlie says I can make changes, but I can't find the update. Went to ? button which produces profile but can't find the update. Sorry, totally computer ignorant and brain not firing on all cylinders either. Anyone?

Posted by meg (Member # 22) on :

Lymeloco...I think we are all exploring the functions here. Please don't leave, as I think this voting thing may be gone one way or another soon.

It takes a while to get all the bugs out of the system.

Toot~! Can't find anything about the quote function....maybe it doesn't exist anymore? I can find a quote button when I go to edit my post--or reply to a thread...but I think that's just to put quote marks around what you put in?

Charlie---You said it~! Oldie Moldies we are :-)
(haven't got the smiley thing down yet)

I really like the personal message function...that may be the best new feature here.

Thanks for the explanation. I updated my profile to delete the stars (too bad, kinda liked them, like getting a good report card) because I think this feature could be misused when tempers are flaring. Suspect the consensus of opinion will be to disable this feature.

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

Loco....cool down and please stay! [Smile] I didn't say newbies SHOULDN'T have stars......but that's one way to identify a newbie. We need to pay attention to those needing help when they first come here.

I agree we can do without the stars.

Meg......tincup's number is higher because she had to re-register once about a year ago. I never quite understood what happened there.

I have to say that the past few months, I have been saddened to see how many ppl here just complain about anything and everything.

I've noticed that very few people have even said thanks for all that has been done already by our mod's.

For god's sake - they are freakin stars. That's it. If you can't just simply ignore them, you can decide to disable them if you want. It's NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL.

the rating system will significantly expedite a search by visitor to the site. they'll more quickly get answers.

facetiously, now that i received 5-stars, by which i'm honored, i now have to find a job with an army that excepts 5-star, albeit disabled, generals. [Wink] [Razz] [Big Grin]

I don't like the stars, and they remind me of a
person's credibility with Ebay. My husband uses
ebay and tells me what the ratings mean in terms
of honesty, punctuality, promptness of sending
money, package out.

So why the stars? We all deserve a star for even
living with this horrid illness.

We need gold ones. LOL.

Hi Pab,

Thanks for trying, I appreciate it. I decided to disable the rating (I guess it worked), so I don't have to stress out about the whole thing.

If just all my worries were that simple to deal with...

Lyddie,

I did not mean to hurt anyone buy giving a rating, I personally rated posters that I'd met through lymenet since last year. And posters that have a great deal of knowledge... some of which are at a level of understanding that I can't even understand what they are saying.

A better feature that I like and I found while working through the new system program was to add to my buddy list instead of actually rating the person.

I am still trying to figure out all of this. Try, try again

I agree with Janet...I figure if we're surviving this disease, we deserve 5 stars. So I just keep going down giving people that rating.

I'm too Lyme-brained to remember if anyone annoys me or otherwise gets on my nerves. I figure we're just here trying to get and give information, doing the best we can.

The changes on the site have been awesome. The only challenge I seem to have is with the search. Which I must be doing wrong, because I get the weirdest replies...
