Just checking in to see how everyone is doing and give a quick update.
I will be having some more time to chat on Lymenet, so I will be back and bugging you all alot!
Many of you know that myself, my 9 year old son Derek and my 7 year old daughter Mikayla all have Lyme.
I have been off meds for 18 months and have been doing fairly well. I have had a relapse, due to the stress of my daughter Mikayla, being diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes 5 months ago.
Mikayla has been off all meds for lyme for the past 3 months and seems to be doing okay as far as lyme goes. She does have a couple symptoms I am concerned about and will bring up with her LLMD in November when we go for her follow up.
Mikayla has been having a very hard time dealing with her new diagnoses of type 1 diabetes. She continues to struggle with highs and low, large keytones, and the everyday stressors of being 7 years old and having diabetes.
She has to have 7 - 10 finger prick blood tests everyday, as well as 3 insulin injections daily. She is a very brave little girl.
She did a walk to cure diabetes, walk a thon and "Team Mikayla" raised $2710.00 to help find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes.
The local newspaper was so impressed by her determination to not let this disease take away her childhood, and the way she is handling her illness (...and her determination to help find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes...)
that they ran a front page cover story in the newspaper about her daily challenges with diabetes, and her fund raising efforts to cure diabetes. It was a beautifully written story and she is very proud of herself, as are we.
Derek is doing better with his lyme, but his joint pain is getting progressively worse in his hands and he now has to have a 504 plan at school as writing is becoming difficult for him.
He is a very strong willed and independent little boy and hates the fact that he needs this extra help to get his writing assignments done.
But he knows that it has to be done and the school is doing a very good job of keeping his problems low key, so others aren't aware that he is having difficulty.
He also continues to mix up his letters and fatigue is still a major issue. But hey, compared to where we were a year ago, he is doing remarkably well.
We go to Dr.J's in November and I am hoping that we can get him some help for his joint pain. I know they want to start him on plaqunile and I have some concerns about this med, as I took it myself and the potential side effects are worrisome.
So that in a nutshell is how we are doing.. I hope all of you are well, I'll stop by and check in again real soon

Thanks for the update LB..Lyme and juvenile diabetes make a horrible toxic combination..We know first hand..Hope things are soon much better..lymemomtooo

Hi Lymebrat, Derek, & Mikayla!! Been wondering how y'all are doing. So glad to have an update on your situation.
Lots of good news, & some news I wish had been better. Keep those good reports coming.
So proud of Derek & Mikayla raising that much money for Juvenile Diabetes. $2,710 is awesome!!!
Tell Derek I still think of him when I hear the bugle at Fort Jackson. Couldn't believe the timing, but when I started reading your post, I heard the 11 o'clock bugle at Fort Jackson.
Tell Mikayla that everytime I hear about Juvenile Diabetes here in South Carolina, I think about her & how brave she is.

sorry about the kid's tho.i see that as unfair to them,to go through all this..

Hey, gary! Been wondering about you. Getting any treatment? It worries me when people disappear. If you feel like it, post a thread with an update on your situation. As I remember, you were hoping your test result would convince doc to treat. Do you have any co-infections too?

Thank you all for posting!
I am home today, as I had to pick Mikayla up from school as her blood sugar level was up to 600. I called the children's hospital and as she is so insulin sensitive, they had me give her 1 unit of insulin, to bring her level down.
90 Mins, later, she said she felt funny and her blood sugar level was down to 70! ( which is low for her). She feels miserable and the doctor said it is due to the fact that her blood sugar went from 600 to 70 in 90 mins. So I have her resting on the couch and hope she will fell better soon.
Luckily her keytones are only trace, so that is some good news;)

Thanks for the well wishes!!! Derek will think it was "too Cool" that the bugle sounded while you were reading my post.
He went trick or treating last night, dressed as a Green Beret Soldier. He looked like he was a real soldier marching up and down the streets..he even used a real Army helmet as his trick or treat bucket. And he saluted every homeowner before he asked for a treat..he is such a character.
Derek and Mikayla talk about you often and they even put you on their Christmas card list, so look in your mailbox around Christmas for an updated picture of them.

Hi Gary, hope things are going okay for you. Thanks for the nice post. It was good to hear from you.
Luckily Mikayla's diabetes doctors at the Children's hospital, think it is important for kids with diabetes to be kids first, so they actually encouraged us to take her trick or treating.
We went last night and Mikayla was a Snow Princess and Derek of course went as a Green Beret Soldier.
Mikayla worked in 2 pieces of candy into her carb count for the night and we adjusted her insulin to include this treat. We did give most of her candy away and she only kept a few of her favorite pieces for special treats.
But she was able to dress up and enjoy the excitement of Halloween , which is more fun than eating all the candy anyways.
Thank you for always having such nice things to say and for always being there to support me and my family.
I'll post more if I can get Mikayla settled down for a nap.
